best spark plug inserts for B230 motor 900

Just wondering what your opinions are of the various spark plug thread repair kits.

FCPEuro sells a CTA-2340 "top hat" kit for less than $15, but I can't find any online reviews for it.

"Time-Sert" and "Heli-coil" are also out there

Thanks

For several years I tuned radar system switches and limiters - We used tens of thousands of heli-coils and I never heard of or saw any problems with them.

On my test equipment the coils were used thousands of times per year and I never saw one wear out.

    Heli-coils get my vote.

You are saving the cost and time of a cylinder head removal - no place to try to save money

james it can dangerous to helicoil a cylinder while on the engine

apart from the aluminum threads which wind up on the piston after you drill and tap to oversize you have the steel tang which must be broken off at the base of the helicoil.

i suppose it could be done but you need to vacuum everything out of the piston chamber and ensure you account for the tiny steel tang

        Dear trichard,

Hope you're well. Excellent points!!! Would a small magnet be helpful, or does the surrounding iron and steel (pistons, cylinder walls) make a magnet useless for extracting the tang?

Also, after the work's done, is it wise to wipe the piston's top with a grease-coated swab (to attract and hold metal shavings)?

        Hlpe this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook
