Automatic Transmission 900 1995

Hi all, A question on the difference if any between a turbo and non-turbo AW-71 transmission. I need to replace my transmission in my 1995 940 Turbo and before I order one I want to know if there is a difference in the trannys. A lot of sites that sell used and rebuilt AW-71's will list them as Turbo and Non-Turbo, Is there really a difference or is this just something they ask? Thanks for your help, Max.

    Dear Maxspeed,

Hope you're well. The key difference between Aisin-Warner (AW) transmissions installed in non-turbo and turbo cars has to do with the torque converter. In non-turbo cars, the torque converter has a "lock-uP" feature, which activates at/about 48 miles/hour. This improves fuel efficiency. AW transmissions installed in cars with turbo-equipped engines, do not have locking torque converters.

AW trannies with the locking torque converter have an "L" after the model designation, e.g., AW71L.

The Volvo Pocket data booklet - Cars (700,850,900) 1991-1996, p. 100, shows there's a 6mm (1/4") difference in the diamenters of the locking and non-locking torque converters. I'd infer from this difference that these units do not interchange.

Rarely on this board is transmission replacement discussed. In most cases, a flush - replacement of the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) - restores the tranny to smooth operation.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook
