B20 & M40 identification 140-160

What do I need to ID and engine and a transmission? Trying to get an idea of what year, and perhaps the model of car (sedan, I think- guessing 140 series) The engine is a B20 stamped 20205 and is has SUs M40 transmission is cast with number 380100, 120N, K4. It has a really large yoke

I'm trying to help a friend sell this but he does not remember what vehicle it came from. It has been in storage for 30+ years.

Bob

Engine:
There were 80+ versions of the B20 engine.
It varies based on type (B20A/B/E/etc), gearbox, steering (LHS/RHS), market and so on.

All had a 6 digit type number like these;
4969xx
4980xx
4982xx

Look below spark plug 2 and 3.

Number to the right for the type number is the serial number of that specific engine and of less interest here.

Gearbox (M40/M41);
look under and rear, there is a brass plate with the needed numbers.

I have a list with the engine numbers, but 16 is missing on it?? 12 would be a B20B out of a 140, that would probably be correct.
No more infos on the gearbox.
regards Michael

16 was a cast number on the block just forward of the breather opening directly below the #2 plug. My mistake.

I pulled the breather off and saw a stamped "29" lurking underneath to the right of the "4969" cast into the block right near the top of the block.

Posting clear pictures of the cylinder head and block will help ID the engine.

Multiple pictures of the both sides of the block and top view and side views of the the cylinder head.

There should be a ID plate with a Volvo part number riveted to the underside of the transmission near the transmission mount holes.

The 380100 is the part number for just the transmission case and not the whole transmission.

I'll see what I can do. The manifolds are still on it. I would have thought the number stamped into the cast iron (20205)would be a sequential production number but my searching did not come up with engine number data. I'll have to go back again. It's in a very cramped space. Does it make sense to remove the carbs and manifolds and sell them separately?

The yoke looks like it may have been for a parking brake, as it looks like a mini disc brake rotor. I don't recall have that on my 71 142E, but it has been a lot of years.

I know it is just a casting number. I was not sure it there was a date code in the second or third row.

Volvo didn't cast production numbers into their blocks, but they did hand stamp a number on the side of the block.

I have never found a numerical reference, but I've heard someone in Sweden does have access to some information that might help. But it ain't free and AFAIK, the service is for identifying details about a specific car or VIN, not an engine.

It depends on which manifold(s) are on the motor and their condition.

Volvo put the extra large output flange on M40s mounted in 145 station wagons. The extra weight acts like a flywheel and adds inertia.

According to the Volvo parts manual, the transmission came out of an early 145.

Thank you. I have a correction on the engine numbers

16 was a cast number on the block just forward of the breather opening directly below the #2 plug. My mistake.

I pulled the breather off and saw a stamped "29" lurking underneath to the right of the "4969" cast into the block right near the top of the block.

Both are available
