544 Wiper/Washer Woes 444-544 1962

I think the PO had the dash out and put back poorly, because many of my problems are result of things just disconnected. After a couple rounds of poking around up under there I got the heater door and temp control valve working, but then came to wiper/washer system. I got the bar that connect motor to wiper arms back in place, but am missing the bolt/nut that runs thru that U-shaped connector where the 2 arms join.
Then realized whole assembly is loose because the bolt & rubber bushing way up at top of the plate that connections to cowl isn’t there.
Then I removed switch to sort out those connections and realized (thanks to Ron’s article) that I have a 122 type wiper switch on my 544!
Plus my washer pump motor is a rusted mass, but the motor can be unbolted from the cap and the pump, and that cap with the clear plastic shaft and intake actually looks to be in pretty good shape.
Does anyone have source for just the 12v pump motor by itself?
How about the rubber bushing (658147) & bolt (955272-0) for the wiper bracket?
And the nut (955274-6) & bolt (955781-0) for the connector arm?
And while at it I’ll need 3 x washers (955893-3).

When you get the washer sorted out, consider adding a water filter like later model 740s have - It is compact and has a large capacity to hold debris.

Our '88 745 almost drove me crazy clogging the nozzles all the time.

You might put a check valve in also.

    544 Wiper/Washer Woes 444-544 1962

I'm just finishing installation of a wiring harness in my '63 544, and am puzzled by the operation of the windshield washer. I'm guessing that I don't have the correct switch, looking at the thread about washer "woes". The blue wire from the switch is there, but doesn't do anything. If I can't find a "dual purpose" 544 switch, will a switch from another model work?

Unfortunately, the stock 2 position (off-on) switch is special for the single speed SWF wiper motors used on the PV Volvos and the stock 3 position (off-on-on w/washer) wiper switch needed to make the washer pump work is even rarer.

The simplest way around this problem is to install a separate switch to operate the washer pump in conjunction with a stock PV wiper switch.

IIRC, I once used a VW bug wiper switch in a 544 as they also used SWF single speed wiper motors, but the Volvo knob didn't fit the switch and the VW switch still didn't have a washer pump option.

I have posted a picture of the correct switch with the washer function. Works as off/on/wash
        regards Michael

          Bazza;

Unfortunately, it is not possible to use a four position 122 switch either, as it does not have the closing contact in the OFF position necessary for the 544 Park switch. A separate Wash momentary switch is probably the least complicated solution.

The bolts, nuts and washers you need are nothing special, just 6mm with 1.25 pitch and a good hardware store will have them.

    955272 is 6mm x 20mm
    955274 is 6mm x 25mm

The rubber bushing/grommet is NLA, but you might find something suitable at the hardware store.

My local DIY electronics supply store has a good selection of rubber grommets and you might find something you can use.

Finding a replacement washer pump motor by itself won't be easy. Volvo updated that washer pump several times and there is now a reproduction version that isn't exactly the same but does work.

I have used and new versions of the later style of washer pump.

      Sorry, wrong pitch.

Correct metric thread pitch for the 6mm bolts is 1.0, not 1.25.

Thanks very much for the help!
I have a possible lead on a pump but if that doesn’t pan out I might touch base with you again on those you mentioned.
Not having much luck on the correct switch for the wiper+washer setup
(seen a couple for wipers alone; seems the switch for both functions for 544s is getting rare).

Ok, let me know if you do need a pump.

The correct original 2 position wiper switch with windshield washer is a hard part to find anywhere as the PV didn't come from the factory with the pump, reservoir, switch and knob and had to ordered separately.

FYI, I have an original good used 1 position wiper switch for a 544 if you need 1.
