Strut Gland Nut? 700

Hi all,

I plan on replacing my front struts but have an obstacle in my way.

Has anyone seen a gland nut that is rounded on the top with no slots or holes to use a tool on?

Hopefully you will be able to see these pictures:

The passenger side has a normal looking gland nut but the drivers side has the odd one described above. I'm wondering if it has a gland nut or maybe someone welded something onto the strut tube to keep the strut insert in. Also, the car is from Illinois so I'm not sure if this is rust or welding material.

Thanks for any help.

    Strut Gland Nut? 700

Hi and thank you for the responses,

Looks like I'm going to have to find "new" strut tubes. I decided not to even try to find out if it was welded together or the remnants of a broken gland nut. I don't want to risk damaging the strut rod until I can find a replacement.

Does anyone know if I will be able to use a 940, pre 95' 960, or different year 740/760 strut tube from the boneyard?

I tried searching but came up short on an answer. My car is a 1988 with bendix calipers and abs. There is a 1994 960 in the junkyard. I'm wondering if the holes for the brake calipers are going to be the same? Also wondering if my hubs will go onto these spindles, or if I can use the 960 hubs. I disabled my abs anyway so I'm not too concerned about having working abs.

I'll post back if I come up with a solution. Thanks again everyone, I much appreciate the help.

      Strut Gland Nut? 700

Thought I would post back with some info. in case someone runs across this in the future.

Over at tbricks someone said that the strut assembly/tube will swap between my 88' 740 and the 94' 960. I hadn't confirmed but I would assume that any 740,760,940,960 up to 1994 should swap given they have abs. The tone wheels for abs differ but in my case I disabled my abs so I will use the 960 hub. I'll update in a month or so when I do the swap.

Thanks again for the help all

      Hi Moustachio,

Yikes !! It doesn't really look like a weld there to me.

I think some of these gland nuts are made in 2 pieces. The top gripping part, a hex plate or whatever, is resistance welded to the lower threaded part.

I think what you're seeing is the lower threaded part having lost it's mate. I can only guess at how that came to be.

One scenario I can imagine is that the weld might have been defective and/or the mechanic replacing the strut leaned a little too hard on his 3 foot pipe wrench and sheared the weld. Facing the ire of his customer, or maybe his boss, he opted to get his torch and remove the evidence that might rattle and attract attention, and then button up the job. The strut worked fine and everyone was happy until now, 10 years later.

      regards,
      Peter

It looks like someone laid down some nice looking welds -- maybe to "fix" damaged threads on the gland nut or in the strut tube. I think you'll be looking for a replacement tube. - Dave

You can't see the gland nut in those pictures and that is because it is being covered by the Styrofoam bump stop.

You should be able to lift the bump stop with a screwdriver to expose the gland nut.
