240 auto transmission rear seal 200

Hello,
I'm changing the real seal and bushing on my auto trans in my 240. Is there any method or tool that can be used to replace the bushing. I'm told that this needs to be done by a transmission shop.
Thank you!

here is the tool. it makes a multi hour very messy job """effortless""" taking at most 30 minutes.

these tools was made in the 80's i think by a company in reno, nv which made among other things the seals for this job. they gave the tool away to shops that bought a minimum number of seals per order (25 i think) from them as a sweetner.

this tool was not a volvo shop tool and does not show up in volvo tool catalogs

if you do not have it or can not borrow it plan on a few hours works.

the worst part of the job is scrapping the tailshaft gasket remnants off the transmission. awkward access

be VERY careful removing the bushing from the soft aluminum housing. do that job on the bench if you do not use this tool.

      Thanks for the input,
Didn't know where to get the tool so tool the tailshaft housing off and will get the bushing in this week. As mentioned getting off the old gasket was the worst part. I had some CRC gasket remover that seemed to help quit a bit.
      Thanks again,
      Joel

Yes, there is a tool that removes the tailshaft bushing without the need to remove the tailshaft housing.

    240 auto transmission rear seal 200 1986

    Hi Joel Griff951,

I'll guess you are asking for your 1986 Volvo 240? Or, if not 1986, what year 240, please?

Please see this FAQ page entry:
    https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionAuto.htm

    Specifically:
    https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionAuto.htm#Trans_Output_Shaft_Bushing

You can take the removed tail shaft housing to an auto machinist (best) or maybe a transmission (trust worthy?) shop so they can press in / out the bushing and seal.

Better to press smoothly than use a hammer and something acting as mandrel to pound the bushing in and out.

Also, the auto machinist should have a seal press to properly press in the seal evenly versus using fingertips.

Not performed this task in a very long time, so others here have better insight to make your task easier.

It also helps us when you reply to your original post responses so we know we are helping you.

So, please lettuce know how you make out with your repair.

    Hope that halps.

    Back to work!

    Happy Sat-Your-Day!
