Thermostat temp - problem? 700 1991

I don't recall a problem with this on any of my 240's, but on my 740 the temp only goes up to about 1/3, not the middle (for years now). So this winter (NE Ohio) I put a piece of cardboard in front of radiator and it kept in the middle pretty good. So with spring coming up soon (wait! today!), I took out the cardboard. Should I replace my thermostat with a hotter one? If so, which works best for my climate? Thanks.

Definitely sounds like the thermostat. They are a cheap maintenance item that is easy to replace.

Should also improve your MPG as well.

How long have you owned the 740?

Our '90 744 TI did the same thing - our NA '90 745 was fine.

When I opened the thermostat housing, I found that the thermostat had been pushed open and cocked to stay open - then I found that the electric fan was siezed!

I had two 850 thermostats fail open the cars would warm up, then cool on the highway.

Before you replace the thermostat with an OE version, get an infrared thermometer and check the temp of the thermostat housing when the engine is hot. Don't want to throw money at the engine bay when the fault is in the instrument cluster.

    90C sounds about right.

      Thermostat temp - testing 700 1991

I actually never heard of an infrared thermometer, may actually get one (good excuse to buy another tool!). I guess I could also pinpoint all my cold air leaks in my old house. Long time ago I took out my thermostat, hung it in a pot of water on my stove with a kitchen thermometer, turned on the heat, and just watched at what temp it opened.
