I parked my 310,000 mile Wagon on a slight incline facing up in my driveway.
The temperature was 6 degrees, and I started the car and let it idle. There was gas dripping from the top of the fuel tank onto the pavement below.
I have noticed a gas smell around the car lately.
What is needed? I have been scouting gas tanks at IPD and Rock Auto, but there are many variations of tanks, and how do I figure out which one is the correct fit?

Does your fuel gauge wok properly?

Does your car act up when the fuel level is low?

Our '88 745 has a problem that caused issues when the fuel level went below 1/4 of a tank. This is common in 740s, and has to do with the pickup

In any event, it would be prudent to use most of the fuel before you began your work.

I vote rotted sender. Have dealt with that issue before. Easy enough to inspect and identify, harder to change depending how rusty. Last one I did, the lock ring had to be cut off. Less than desireable when dealing with fuel. That'ste NY rust for you!

Odds are the leak is from a deteriorated return hose that attaches to the Sender Unit (remove the inspection plate under the rear floor and the back of the wagon)
The hose drops down the front of the tank and meets the return line.

That or another hose, or the top of the Sender Unit is leaking from rust.

Tanks almost NEVER leak.

If indeed you need a tank I feel your pain. Scuttlebutt is the aftermarket tanks are not liked.

There are other reasons your fuel could be dripping from the top of the tank. Have you looked through the inspection cover?

Had to replace the fuel send unit. One of the tubes had a pinhole in it.
All is well.

Ditto what Art Wrote. Leaks from the top of the tank could be a rusted tank unit sender -- or in one of my cars ('76 265) pinholes in the top of the tank itself.--Dave

I had a similar experience with my 1990 740. Turned out to be the return pipe on the fuel sender was leaking.
