Brake Rotors - Which is best? 900

My 94 945 needs new front rotors.

Any suggestions on which rotors are the best?

Brembo
Zimmerman
Mele
ATE
Genuine Volvo

???

I used genuine Volvo last time. Need to check the mileage... It seems front rotors go pretty quick.

Thanks for any info.

Brake Rotors - Which is best? 900

The brake system on many new high performance cars today are designed to eat rotors. when Road & Track did an extended test on a Porsche Boxter, the rotors had to be replaced as soon as the pads.

I think that Formula 1 cars are designed to wear out rotors before pads - I think that it has to do with the rotors ability to absorb and dissipate heat. They use different rotors for tracks that need different brake wear.

We have put 600K on 740s, 850s, and XC70s - I have always been pleased with Volvo brakes, especially in the few instances when I REALLY nesded them.

    Thanks for the comments.

I will try Zimmerman this time.

I did notice the front rotors on the 945 go a lot faster than on the 245.

Esp if you have Vented Rotors...my older 240 and 245 had NonVented and the rotors tended to warp.

The 87 245 w/vented rotors, that I bought used in 1997, still has the same rotors...4 sets of front pads later.

    fwiw
equating experiences with Rotors used the on a 240 with Expected Results of that brand of rotor on a 940 do not take into accnt that 940s are notorious for Eating Rotors. This is a common complaint.

It's not the Brand of the rotors it's the design of the 940 system...aka the way the Calipers function.

Yep. Say no to made in chinesium. Chinesium are dog-awful alloys in both brake rotors and also components to build a new Bay Area bridge. Or alloys used to build outdoor (OSP out-side plant) telecom communication cabinets. (The urethane and powder coat finishes were not so well adhered to the aluminum, and the steel rack pillars inside the cabinet were severely corroding and malodorous, like rotten smelling, after arrival across the Pacific ocean.

Set of vented front solid rotors warped in a year of not hard or hot driving. The box brand suggested Europa, though forget the brand origins yet unknown if chinesium alloy. The only set I bought new.

All were junkyard brake rotor pulls, well above minimum thickness, turned (lathed) at better brake and muffler shops and using Volvo (Made in India) rather soft and dusty blue box pads. I'll not ever use PBR or other brake pads with metal in them. Have yet to try fully ceramic pads.

No cross-drilled rotor experience, though I saw these on RWD junkyard Volvos a very few times.

Also, them slotted rotors, even those made by Zimmeran and Brembo, with German and Italian steel alloy, and both nations make quality alloys for the application, can warp way more easily with usual or moderate motoring and braking, than do their regular ventilated rotors.

Flush that brake fluid! Many seem to like black brake fluid and partly seized calipers on the spacedfacedbooktoob Volvo 240 fan club.

the brakes are designed to eat rotors. started with the floating calipers on the 740s. the 4 piston 240s RARELY need rotors, like other 4 piston cars-like 83 back or so bmws and 91 back mercedes-each depending on model.

brembo-made in italy, no chinese-i've seen them.
    balo

i have no opinion on bosch-never used them.

any slotted rotor is out because the slots shave the pad with each rotation-shorter pas life.

    good luck, chuck.

Brembo is OEM and a good choice.

I have always liked the ATE premium ones. When the atomic groove on them wears away, it is time to replace.

Bosch quietcast rotors good enough for everyday use with Volvo OE roulunds pads.

I've used some of the brands listed and following my son's (MiniCooper tech) recommendation used Zimmerman for my 1980 245 front rotors (solid) with good results--been on the car for years now--and a 1984 245 Turbo front (vented) -- always smooth in operation. One of the things I liked best--they don't require washing away any preservative before use. -- Dave
