Did you check the OBD for any codes that aren't producing a check engine light? There might be something there that will at least point you in the right direction instead of throwing parts at the problem.

hi bb- I think the 940 had the same 4 cyl engine as my 92 245 which gets 25 around town and 28 -29 on the hwy, but it has 3 pedals on the floor and an m47 trans with overdrive. if yours is an automatic your mpg will be lower. a number of 240s around here late 80s , early 90s are automatic and those folks tell me their mpg is about the same as yours. regards oldduke

FWIW - my daughter had a 1990 760 Turbo/Intercooled wagon. In perfect shape and everything working just like it should - it consistently got about 16 mpg around town and 21-22 on the highway. If your wagon has the turbo motor, I'd say the mileage is about to be expected. My daughters older 242 (76) didn't do much better with the naturally aspirated 2.1L -- about 18 around town and 24 on the highway.
