Sunroof Leak S90-V90 1997

I'm sure this question has raised it's ugly head before but I haven't been on here much lately.
Doesn't matter what I do I can't stop the sunroof from leaking on my wife's 1997 V90. Previous owner had it replaced...twice...and it still continues to leak. Drains are not plugged and the seal around the glass itself has been siliconed. No Luck. I saw a suggestion on another forum to seal around the outer perimeter with the protective tape you can use on the leading edge of your hood to prevent stone chips, then disable the sunroof. Has anyone else gotten this desperate and has it worked? We don't use the sunroof anyway so it wouldn't be missed.

I just repaired the leak from the moonroof on my 940, https://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1655687/940/960/980/V90/S90/moonroof_leakrepair.html

I suggest you pull the headliner so you can see where the water is getting in when you turn a hose on the roof. It is a lot of work to pull the headliner. I've probably removed and reinstalled more than ten.

If the sunroof assembly is essentially the same on a 960/s90/v90 as on a 940, this might apply -

I had to pull the sunroof & pan on my 940 wagon recently.
Attached to the pop-up wind deflector there is a removable cover over the sunroof cables & guide tubes.
Under that cover was a lot of dried "plumber's putty" sealant, designed to keep water from wicking up out of the sunroof pan and over the front of the sunroof pan. Look in the 940 FAQs, it's in there somewhere.
I applied new plumber's putty, which is not supposed to harden.

On our 1997, the sunroof leak wasn't completely solved until we replaced the windshield.

This car had the windshield replaced a couple of years ago but this leak problem had been going on since before that. I thought I had it beat when I fixed the seal around the glass. Takin' it in to a local glass shop this week to see if they will completely seal it. Thanks everyone for all your suggestions.

I had a sunroof leak In our XC70

I taped all around the sunroof with high quality duct tape that was much more flexible than regular duct tape - I am sure that the sunroof was sealed - still had a leak.

My tech found a leak at the top of the windshield - I let them bring in a windshield company - they broke my windshield and - I still had a leak

If you find or suspect a windshield leak at the top, try some tape first - Use three strips of ordinary electrical tape - take care to let it relax, as you stretch it when you take it off its roll. Clean above and below the windshield groove and run one strip above the groove to give a good surface for the next strip which you run over the groove, then run a third strip lapping over the second strip to serve to block the wind at speed.

When we owned 850s, they were known to lose their rubber strips across the top of the windshields - I sealed the rubber strip (after I lost two!) with two strips of regular electrical tape - this fix lasted for years.

A tech cleared the drains = I still had a leak

Did I mention that in a bad rain I had 2 INCHES OF WATER ON THE FLOOR!

Once more they cleared the drains, finally the leak has stopped. (Personally, I think that they found another back-up somewhere.)

Claus posted that sometimes the drain hose can break or split in the door post - perhaps you should look there.

    I suggest -
    1 check your windshield
    2 Tape your sunroof
3 Remove trim and check your drain hoses

    Good Luck

Thanks for the suggestion on the windshield. I will explore that possibility as well but the water seems to be coming in through the sunroof somewhere. Gives me a few more things to think about though. Thanks again.

Are you sure you clean all 4 drains.

Where are you seen the water in the carpet.

Tape all the seems of the sunroof and see if it stops the water.

All drains are clear. Seeing water in various areas. Seems to be related to how the car is parked in the driveway and the wind direction. Sometimes there is water on the front passenger's seat, sometimes the A or B pillar is wet and it has run down onto the carpet. Often doesn't show at all until you take a turn, then it drips down from the front passenger corner of the sunroof. Not exactly consistent. Will try the tape. Thanks.
