Mystery Wire 200 1984

I have been unable to identify a black wire with insulated connectors located above the Electronic Control Unit plug. One end of the wire runs from the lower passenger side firewall. I could not determine if it was running from the engine compartment (suspected) or the upper dash. The wire is 18 gauge with insulated 16/14 spade connectors. I have looked in my Green Wiring Diagram Book and other sources and have been unable to figure this one out. Thanks, Andrew

Unidentified Wire 200 1984

I posted a picture to the BrickPix tonight of the ECU area of my Volvo. After cutting off the 34 year old wire connector and installing new insulated spade connectors on the wire in question, I've had no more problems. Thanks to all who responded.

Andrew

Thought the picture would help me but even with a magnifying glass I'm still not able to explain what your wire repair fixed.

Someone with an 83 or 84 LH 240 should be able to identify this. All I have from that era is the 83 k-jet turbo -- not much help with this. The 84 we had was on its way to Valhalla 10 years ago.

Like Kitty says, a photo would go a long way toward helping here.

In your description, you say "insulated connectors" and you seem rather sure about the wire gauge and gauge application of the connectors. To my mind, this brings up an image of wiring added by an owner, not Volvo provided. Volvo used wire harnesses with square mil sizes, not AWG, and none of its connectors indicate AWG on them. Guess: aftermarket immobilizer wiring. The only black wire I remember back there is a thickly insulated black wire for the courtesy light switches.

Hi Art,

Thanks for your response. Hope you are well, and that you've had a good day at work. I had to cut the bad connectors and replace them with 16/14 insulated spade connectors. That is how I know the gauge of the wire(s). This car has not been modified by anyone else, and certainly not me.
Don't you have an '84? This connector is above the ECU plug, and if touched, the car would cut off. Since I replaced the connectors, no more problems. I'll try to go out tomorrow and take a picture. Thanks, Andrew

A photo or photos would help.

Post to the BrickPix while your'e logged into your brickboard account. Your only limit is that the max file size is one megabyte (1024 kb). Ignore the pixel size restrictions. And then reference in your post for other to see in the BrickPix or use Art's instructions to embed the image in your post message.

Use the absolute URL not the relative URL that brickpix serves up. Sometimes the relative URL brickpix serves up does not display the image so readily.

Or post to a image hosting sharing sight other than dog-awful and rotten Photobucket.

Yep, the Volvo Wiring Diagram PDF for 1984 240 is not so helpful:

Hope that halpz yoooooo.

A Guy in Austin, TX wants me to restore his 1993 240 to running condition. He says he'll pay me. He parked it due to ignition problems he says four years ago.

Heh.

Thanks, Kitty, and for your response to my other query.

Since it's black, I would do a continuity check to another ground. It might just be a groundwire.

Mystery Wire 200 1984

Hi, Walt,

I disconnected the connector and checked the side with the female spade connector with my voltmeter to a good ground. I switched the ignition to KP II and got a reading of 12.1 volts, which was a little less than battery voltage.
This wire has caused quite a few no-starts for me. When I left the house the other day to run an errand, the car cut off at the stop sign near my house and wouldn't start until I shook the wire. That is the crux of my original question. This wire is critical to engine function. Thanks, Andrew

Okay I was confused. Thought you meant it was a lose unknown wire,ie not connected on one side.
