B20 Uneven Heating

I'm currently chasing down an unusual heating problem on a B20.
The engine seems to run hot. Especially at the rear of the head. Using a laser pointer type thermometer, the temperature at the temperature sensor is about 40 degrees F higher than the front of the head at the water outlet to the radiator.
The engine is a B20 installed in a '58 Duett. It still has the original radiator, though I have installed a 6 blade fan and an electric 15" pusher fan.
I've flushed the engine and radiator, pulled the heat distribution tube (no blockage). installed a new thermostat. Also new antifreeze with distilled water and "Waterwetter".
I also pulled and inspected the water pump then reinstalled it since it appeared to be in excellent condition.
I have another car with a B20 engine and reading from the same points on the head there is never more than 5 degree difference.
I have only been driving around the neighborhood since the Duett isn't yet registered or insured. I want to get it up and running reliably by the end of March so I can drive it up to Davis.
Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.
Thanks
-TR

"'58 Duett. It still has the original radiator"

    60 year old radiator?
Before chasing and throwing parts, my first step would be having it properly "rodded" out at a radiator shop.
Simply flushing will likely not clean out 60-year old deposits.

I'd make sure the block is truly flushed. Remove the drain in the block and use a stiff wire to probe for packed in grit/rust. A couple of years ago I replaced the freeze plugs in a '75 245 (B20F) and found the entire coolant chamber packed solid. -- Dave

The block drain isn't an option. Someone before my time appears to have broken off a tool in the plug.
As I see it my next options are to either pull the freeze plugs or pull the head.
Since the manifolds have to be removed to get to the freeze plugs pulling the head isn't all that much more work.

That broken tool would be my first choice to remove, that plug is pretty shallow and I bet a couple smacks with a screw driver and hammer would remove it. looks to be the end of a 1/4" bar

          Update
I just bypassed the heater core which seems to have helped some - now about 20 degrees difference, down from 40.
Still poking around before I start any serious wrench turning.
