Hello Spook,
The info provided in the FAQ is great, since this is the first time i am doing this kind of job and without a machine press, i was worried ,and needed to save and reuse the same original bearing!
I bought a harbor freight bearing separator tool part #62593,instead of the 6" three legged gear puller mentioned in the FAQ.The kit i bought comes with two sizes parts ( similar to this shape [O] ) and the rest of the hardware.
After marking and removing the driveshaft from the car,i cut the rubber holding the outer metal frame of the carrier support (all rubber was torn anyway) and used the big size tool [O] by clamping the FLAT side surface of the tool behind the bearing cup on the shaft just snug enough so it can move.
I inserted a 1/2 in thick washer i had between the puller center bolt and the splines end of the driveshaft to protect the splines, sprayed some lubricants between the bearing and the shaft and let it soak for some time.
I carefully tightened the center puller bolt and kept spraying lubricant during the whole process. The whole assembly came out with the bearing undamaged and with a completely reusable bearing.
The bearing had the following letters and numbers stamped on it:
SKF 8009-ZRSI/LT10 Italy B N (8449 on protective rubber)(9249 on opposite side)
By carefully prying the black protective lip around the bearing with a very thin tip small screw driver (i think the protective lip of the bearing is made out of silicone rubber) I was able to lubricate the bearing using a syringe filled with amsoil grease lubricant i had on the shelf, squirting small amounts 1/2 in apart on both sides and finished the rest of the installation process for installing the bearing into cup and installing the whole assembly onto shaft as described in the FAQ.
I installed the driveshaft back on the car, took it for a test drive and all is well.
I hope this will help someone along with the info provided in the FAQ.
Take care and may God bless!
Charles
