Original Volvo 240 Stereo - CR-2170 200 1984

Would anyone happen to know who made the CR-2170 AM/FM stereo and cassette deck that was available in the '83 and '84 model years? I think it was made by Blaupunkt, but not sure.

Also, would anyone have a source for a "known good" CR-2170? They pop up on eBay every now and then, but my experience has been that there is something wrong with almost every single one of them.

I seem to remember "back in the day" that while the CR-2170 sounded good (very good with tape play back in fact), it did not seem to last very long. I had one where the cassette deck became non-functional and the car was only 6 or 7 years old. Others where the tuner took a dump and all you'd get was a high pitched squeal - but the tape deck worked fine in that unit.

I am working on "restoring" a 240 and would like to make it as original as possible.

Thanks in advance.

    Original Volvo 240 Stereo - CR-2170 200 1984

For the era, I'd have to guess with some feeling of certainty Mitsubishi made the Volvo 240 CR-2170 stereo radio / cassette. Also used in 700-series with a different fascia.

Blaupunkt was replaced by Mitsubishi in the mid / late 1970s / early 1980s and later came the Alpine audio schema for all Volvo models, AFAIK. There may be some overlap.

On the PC boards you may find a Mitsubishi maker's mark. They may have made the cassette transport motor also or the motor may be made by Nidec. Maybe Panasonic?

    A video indicating Mitsubishi:

A few other you bube toob videos there to find treating the CR-2170.

You may want to research the Turbobricks forums as many threads on factory Volvo radios and there restoration and care, as well as modding them to accept digital device inputs, there.

I find these on eBay also.

You may want to ask Franke Ponte in New Jersey. His running advert is here on the ClassAds:

While the oddly-shaped 240/740/940 speakers in 240 were made by Dynaudio of Denmark through the 1990s and beyond, the radio and radio / cassette makers changed. There may be other brands of car radio maker in the 200-series dash. I'm unsure.

An accessory catalogue that shows the Mitsubishi amp atop the images CR-2170 connected via the DIN jack at rear. Or the CR-2170 had the power amp mounted in a box at the backside of the head unit.

At issue would be PC-board level and tape transport mechanism component failure. With enough of these, you may be able to piece together a working unit? Though may be pricey to collecting these to do so. And to make them bulletproof. Yet I seem to recall how the button on these would fail. Broken PC mount solder welds or a failure of the switch contact in the button.

May want to check iPd classifieds also for 240 / 740 parts that may include your radio model.

    Hope that helps.
