92 vs. 94 speedometer 900 1992

I bought a nice garaged 940 turbo sedan. The only issue is that the speedometer doesn't work. I went and got a 94 non turbo cluster and the speedometer worked when I plugged it into my car. However, when I went to swap the 94 speedo into the 92 cluster, I found out why it is a different part number. The 92 speedo connects electronically to the board via 4 screws. The 94 speedo connects via a ribbon.

If none of the guts for the speedo are on the instrument clusters circuit board, then I don't see why I couldn't chop the posts off of the bad 92 speedo screw them in and solder off of them. Once I go through that kind of work, I will be wanting the speedometer to actually be accurate. It's mostly for state inspection purposes. I understand that if I use the 94 cluster, I will lose the turbo and half to jerry rig the fuel gauge. I am going to call around to other junkyards for the right part tommorow, but am curious about if this speedo could custom fit to the older cluster.

92 speedo part no. 3523652

94 speedo 9130043 (maybe I have these switched around?)

The fuel gauge quickly became intermittent, showing empty with no light 80% of the time. I looked at my work and my jumper wire is good. I think that I may have broken the little capacitor that I had to install by bending one of the wires. It's showing no ohm signal like an open circuit. This is my first time doing circuit board work but I think this is the problem. I also am not sure what way the capacitor should be in because I didn't take notice.

    Everything went fine.

PROBLEM: Broken Speedometer in a 1992 940 Turbo

SOLUTION: I used a 1994 960 (no turbo) cluster, with the fuel gauge and turbo tachometer from the original 92 cluster. You have to do this because the 94 fuel gauge will not work. I followed these instructions:
    https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/ElectricalInstrumentClusterInterchangeability.htm

The instructions looked daunting at first. Then I realized that there were several different scenarios described on the page. The section you want to follow is called "Here's Karls circuit work to fitting a 91-2 fuel gauge to the later cluster". The steps are as follows:

-Drill the hole for the new screw

-Install the capacitor from the old board onto the new board

-Sever the circuit in two places

    -Solder in the connecting wire

There are a few reason why I did it this way. This speedo does not have the problems that they did in 1991-2. There was a 94 960 at the local scrap yard and the total cost was $18. I think you are more likely to find a 94 model sitting around than a 91-2; there was both a 94 and 95 960 at the yard. It seems better than buying a 92 speedometer of off eBay that is already half rotten. Unless you want to repair the corrosion and bad capacitors on the speedometer, I think this way is better.

    Dear gallonspermile,

Hope you're well. For instrument/instrument cluster interchange see:
    https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/ElectricalInstrumentClusterInterchangeability.htm .

While I've never owned/operated a turbo-equipped car, I think there's a vacuum hose that goes from the turbo boost gauge to the turbo or to the intake manifold.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Update: I have the 92 turbo tach and fuel gauge in the newer cluster, per instructions. It needs the finger prints cleaned off and then to be tested, tommorrow.

I think that I should put the cluster from the 94 960 non turbo into the 92 940 turbo. This link explains the process except for the turbo part. I can't even figure out what makes the turbo gauge move. there is just a tube coming out the back that goes nowhere, but somehow it works. The circuit boards and connecters look the same going into the two tachometers. There is also the screws and holes for the turbo gauge in the non-turbo cluster. I have to questions:

    1) What makes the turbo gauge move? Can the turbo tach be put in the 94 non turbo cluster?

    2) Can adding the capacitor to the fuel gauge be skipped, as described in this how-to? It says that some people skip it.
