960 gas cap problem 900 1996

tried to remove my gas cap tonight and could not get it off. it just turned freely, no clicking or engagement. turned freely each way. any ideas how to get it off.

Try pushing down as you turn the cap and if that does not work,try pulling up on it as you turn it. If neither of those work get a large pair of pliers and start squeezing the part of the cap you use when turning it, and just break it and then possibly stick a small screwdriver in to help lock the lower and upper parts together so you can turn it and remove it.
