tracing a P1800 owner to before 1975 1800 1962

I recently bought a 1962 P1800 (Jensen model) VIN 4712 in Victoria, BC. In addition to the North Saanich veterinarian I bought the car from, I traced the previous owner to her, Rev. Eugene Morrell to Bend, OR. Turns out he bought the car off a lot at Wades Auto Sales, Vancouver, WA in 1975. The wrinkle is that the car may have been misrepresented by accident when it was purchased then. For years the identification plate off the firewall led the owner to believe the VIN was P18395 and that it was a 1963 model, wrong on both counts. The car was originally paint code 71, grey with black interior but it was painted in the '80s a quasi metallic red. The car was taken, after Rev. Morrell bought, it to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, then to Chilliwack, BC, ending up in Dawson Creek, BC where it was sold in 1986 to the person from whom I purchased it.
Anyone knowing of an early model P1800 sold in or around Vancouver WA in 1975, I love to hear from you. I have lots of pictures and documentation. The car is in rough shape having been parked outside since 1977.
thanks in advance

Congrats on your purchase. The VIN you quoted is not the VIN, it’s the model or type number. The VIN is the 4 or 5 digits (preceded by one or two zeroes) located elsewhere as per the following:

    http://www.vlvworld.com/indexframe.html?1800/Production.htm

Motor vehicle registry often used a partial or incomplete VIN. For example my 1800 with a 5 digit VIN is registered with an additional number 3 preceding the 5 digit VIN.

Also search on here for a potential clue.

    Good luck.

Here is some info on VIN confusion sometimes on the P1800.
The first line on my car's data plate (P18395) is a Type Designation. Regarding P18395 the P18 is for a P1800 (designator for the first 6000 Jensen/pre-Swedish built cars) and the 395 is for an M41 gearbox (M41 is the four speed with overdrive). The VA or HA is a Volvo code for the Jensen series 1800 (eg VB/HB is for VIN 6001 and up used for the 2000 1800S units produced in Sweden in later 1963). The second line of the data plate is the actual VIN (in this case 4712). The third line 71 is the body colour code for Grey with Red interior. According to the book (Bill Webb's "Swedish Iron"), this code only applied in 1961 or 1962 (along with either 69 White (with Red interior) or 70 Red (with White interior)). Three different numbers (46 Red with Black interior, 79 White with Red interior and 80 Gray with Red interior) start with the 1963 1800S (Swedish) production. The next line 301 indicates a Red Vinyl interior. All roof liners were white. Floor mats varied but the black mouldy carpet we found in the trunk is definitely original. The trunk would normally have a black ribbed (longitudinally) rubber mat. The curved vinyl molding around the back parcel shelf would normally be black as would the armrests below the red door panel. The bottom of the door panel and the bottom of the outboard panels below the dash would be the silver material. The rest of the interior panels and seats (front and rear) were all red.

Was the 1975 sale a "private party" sale, or was the car sold through a dealer or broker? If so and that business is still around, you might start there. Of course, most businesses do not keep records for more than 8-10 years at a time.

If it was a private party sale, well....maybe go to the library in the town where it was sold and scan the classified ads on micro fiche for a few months before and a few months after you think it was sold. You're bound to turn up something, perhaps a phone number or address than can be traced to that owner or their survivors.

the 1975 sale was private, bought by Rev. Eugene Morrell from Wades Auto Sales in Vancouver, WA for $1000. The business doesn't exist anymore. It was the original grey at the time of purchase then. Jamie Graham
