1986 240 Manual Swap What Flywheel? 200 1986

Hi,

Did a search but couldn't find the info--I am trying to put together a manual transmission conversion for my 86 240. Done the pedals, drilled the firewall hole. Foud out that a little RTV around the self drilled hole held the clutch cable well enough that when I took it out the rubber fitting on the cable stayed in place and the cable slipped out of it! So that's nice. I got an m46 with aluminum body. I also got a flywheel, clutch and pressure plate that was supposedly from an 85 740 but the machine shop guys said it had been resurfaced too many times and besides it is really probably one from I believe an 88+ 740 non-T. The pressure plate that fit it is the sachs 3082 204 032 and when I look up the pressure plate for an 86, I get a different looking one (270500). So now I'm looking for a flywheel that's supposed to be in there since I have to find a new one anyway and am wondering if anyone had a part number or a photo of the flywheel for a 1986 240 manual? Brickoard has been such a big help to me in the past just wanna say thanks again!

A flywheel from any '85-'86 manual transmission 240 will work. The B21/B23F flywheel ('84 and earlier) is different. The '87 and later (M47) flywheel is also different.

If you want to expand your search, you any pre-1990 740 n/a that came from the factory with an M46 *should* have the correct flywheel.

I assume you are going to install a brand new clutch. For what they cost (about $150 for the kit plus shipping) it is NOT worth reusing an old clutch, even if it appears in good condition. Make sure that you replace the throwout bearing and pilot bearing as well. Since you are swapping flywheels, it would make sense to replace the rear main at the same time.

Before you put the M46 in the car, you might consider replacing things like the 4th gear lockout switch, backup switch, etc. Also you might consider removing and cleaning the solenoid and re-installing it with new o-rings. Also check the wiring that runs up to the shift knob to be sure that it is not frayed.

Okay, great that's what I will look for thanks. Will follow your advice and aim higher than Roadkill standards :). Will need to get new wiring anyway for the trans and OD in case anyone's looking for a source davebarton 240turbo.com has em. Thanks!

I have only seen the "dog dish" style flywheel on later 240s. I think 700 series also used them. The only complication is if you have Ez-k ignition starting in 1989. The flywheel is the same except it has holes drilled in it for the timing sensor. I had a hard time finding an Ez-k flywheel for my 93 when I converted mine. Since you don't need the timing holes you can use one from any year. Just get a clutch kit for that flywheel. The 240 Turbo clutch kit will also fit.

I'm surprised that the flywheel you have has been resurfaced so much. The clutches I have replaced have been due to oil contamination from a leaking main seal or a weak pressure plate. The flywheel surface was smooth enough that I did not have it machined and had no issues.

Awesome, thanks for the info! I'll start looking for a dog dish type for lh 2.2 and get the right clutch kit. I guess the problem is that every time you resurface it, there is a deepening lip on the very outside of the lower friction surface so that the outside of the clutch can catch on it or the clutch fork pushes in but not quite enough to disengage the clutch because the flywheel surface is closer towards the engine by that much. So says the machine shop anyway. They said maybe you can put spacers on the clutch fork to mitigate this but that sounded like a hassle. I'll start looking for another Here's a photo of it, sounds like I got the right type anyway.
