84 244 LH2.0 wiring issues. 200 1984

hi guys i recently bought a project car. yes its an 84 with 5panel tails

so owner said wouldn't run without a jump start and had all these lights on the dash. as soon as you disconnect jumper, all power died. owner said battery read charged.

im not sure if the failed battery took out the alternator or visa-versa. replaced alternator with lights still on.

alternator exciter and oil pressure sender wire were shorted out. all idiot lights on dash lit up. ALT started charging right away.

after redoing the hack job fix from before (cut wires from main plug and re-ran them) i got all the lights to go out on the dash. now i have no parking light, batt, oil, lamda lights at all. bulb failure still works, high beams, turn indicator works too. the dash illumination lights still work. as everything else in the car. overdrive lock out works but no light on dash still.

im hoping the harness is just so old n fried im loosing a ground somewhere. i even tried grounding the alt exciter wire again and nothing.

so now im going to see if i can smog it as-is. if it passes then ill change the harness and hopefully get it all back to normal.

hoping someone could give me some insight on this. hopefully someone has had this happen before. i know these years have bad harnesses but stumped on all the lights not working. also checked all fuses

"its an 84 with 5panel tails"

I think the 5 panel tail light was on 1980, 1981 and 1982 first production series. All newer were 6 panel tail light.

You would have to check the VIN number to be sure.

Funny, this 5-panel question was the interesting part of this post for me as well. I'd also be curious if the VIN matched. Folks often make model year mistakes as a result of the build date sticker, but those errors tend to go the other direction.

My understanding was 1983 saw the last of the 5-panels. We had an '83 DL sedan with 5-panels. Its owner's manual shows a drawing of both configurations, identifying the six-panel variety for GL, GLT, Turbo, and DL Canada. I also own two 83 (Turbos) with six-panel lights. Never heard of an 84 having 5-panel tail lights until this post. Wiring issues? Sure, they all had them.

One way I would distinguish an 83 from an 84 with LH2.0: Pull fuse 12. Does the engine die? It's an 83.

Where you able to pass the CA-state emissions?

I'm not well 1982-1988 Volvo 240 experienced. Others here own and maintain many 1980s-era 240s with great success. Wonders why no reply.

Your 1984 model is smack dab in the middle of the rotting wire harness era on RWD Volvo automobiles.

The engine control wire harness can rot at the pass through bulkhead firewall grommets. More so in hot (read exhaust) and oil soaked and oil grime caked areas.

You can find replacement wire harness new from Dave Barton's site and elsewhere and used replacement wire harnesses on the eBay . See the brickboard ClassAds (see link at top), the classified on Turbobricks (requires account), the iPd USA Classifieds, and else where.

Other issues may affect your LH-Jetronic 2.0 fuel injection / Chrysler MPG ignition. Your inspection and diagnosis will require exhaustive effort.

A digital electrical multimeter can help check for power, continuity, Ohms resistance of connected emissions controls and such, and more. A mandatory tool to help you with more empowered and economical Volvo 240 ownership.

Hope that halps yooo.
