Repairing a leaking all-metal radiator? 200 1989

1989 244DL - LH 2.4 w/EGR

Seven and a half years ago I bought and installed an IPD Heavy Duty 3-row all metal radiator, partly for the extra capacity in my hot tropical summers, and partly for the ability to repair them. Unfortunately now it has sprung a leak. I haven't spotted the leak, but I just replaced both main cooling hoses and I'm still getting a little damp spot in the driveway and the bottom of the core support. I've always used Zerex g05 Coolant in it.

I'm wondering how to go about getting it repaired. Can I just pull the rad and take it to a radiator shop? Is it worth it? Is there some way I can fix it without welding equipment? I'd rather not just replace it, because I can't seem to find the HD radiators anywhere anymore.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ryan

I have removed the rad and plugged the ports except one. (Leaving the hoses on allows them to be plugged and clamped.) Placed it in water and injected air to find any holes. After soldering pressure test with a gauged bike pump.

IPD sold a CFS XXXX(too much trob to find the exact #..5424???) 3 row rad. I bought 1 from IPD and after getting that one, bought the next direct --- saving $$.

These were bought last century. I have had no leaks from the Rad(s.
Don't know what brand that IPD sold you 7 years ago.

And if it is the Metal Rad...then YES to your ques. U may need to find a shop that will spend the time to find the leak.

Tropical? guess that means you don't get a ton of salt splashed :)

Whether or not it's repairable depends entirely on the nature of the leak. Many leaks on brass tanks/copper cores can be brazed -- some can't. Sometimes the repair involves replacing the copper core - buying new rad often a better value. It's getting tougher and tougher to find radiator shops still in business - declining demand AND environmental restrictions.

Yes - pull rad, take to shop for assessment. Then decide.
