240 ABSsensors 200

How to get them out to clean?
aBS light on, fuse replaced, but still.
Bolts removed, but sensor wiggles, but won’t come out of any of the 3 wheels on my93.
Used vice grips, tapped with piece wood, but not coming out.
What’s the trick?

Very carefully. WD40 or similar. Wiggle, pry and slide out. Repeat, very carefully. Don't force to much or the plastic will crack and break. You do not want that outcome.

Probably best to clean those that do not come out by disassembly of hub/bearings. This will a great time to inspect ABS speed sensor ring and service the bearings.

I managed to take them out after some time even the one that was not even turning.
Once removed I recommend cleaning sensor housing and spindle hole and apply your choice of anti-seize before installation.

May be corrosion between the bore and the sensor barrel in the bore.

Did the ABS engage while braking on dry pavement?

Encounter symptoms that may cause the "ABS" indicator to illuminate?

Sorry for your problems.

Eggnog Boy.

Hi Dr. Porter,

Sorry you're having these issues.

Please read Phil Machine Man's reply to a fellow brickboard colleague with ABS issues your encountering:

https://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1651475/220/240/260/280/91_240_abs_always.html

Please read this entry in the FAQ:

https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/BrakesABS.htm#ABS_Sensor_Replacement

Though the Volvo 240 ABS systems does not offer up a reporting ability beyond the ABS light when self diagnostics fail.

Three wheels? The rear ABS sensor and the speedometer sensor are one in the same secured to the rear differential cover plate. If the speedo works, don't bother with it. Though it can't hurt to inspect the area, I guess.

The sensors are sort of fragile. If you can twist them, you *should* be able to remove them. On the ABS sensor barrel are two silicon o-rings. Though after removing the securing machine screw (with Torx head?), if you can twist it, you should be able to rotate it back and forth as you pull.

Don't get Blaster into the brake pad and rotor surface. Use sparingly and directly into the gap between ABS sensor barrel and the hub assembly.

I was able to withdraw the sensors on my 1992 240 for cleaning twice.

If you instrument cluster dash ABS light illuminated recently, such as with a change in temperature (hot to cold or, less so, the reverse), suspect ABS wire harness connector corrosion like at the two front ABS sensor to wire harness connectors at the inner fender. You can see the connector on the exhaust side more easily than the air intake side of the engine bay.

Did you find the fuse to have failed? You are sure the ABS system fuse you replaced had failed? Any indicator of water or moisture intrusion under the seat?

Else, though you are using vice grips, yet have lubed the ABS barrel to hub interface, a twist and pull gently should see the ABS sensor barrel move out and release from the recess in the hub.

One on the barrel are two rather old o-rings that may be swollen larger than the diameter of the recess they originally fitted into when first factory fabricated and installed. The o-rings maybe be red and green.

Questions?

Hope that halps.

Duffed.
