Overheating in slow 5 pm traffic 900 1992

Recently in my newest 1992 Volvo 940 GL, the motor overheated on a long bridge in very slow 5 pm traffic. I managed to get to a parking lot in time before the temp gauge hit the red. I opened the hood and the motor was extremely hot and some antifreeze was dripping slowly from the filler tank. I waited for about 1 1/2 hours before turning the car back on and made it back home without reoccurrance. I don't recall hearing the electric fan motor for the radiator/car motor turn on. Is there a sensor for this electric motor that is malfunctioning? How do I test this theory?

Some time ago I also had a fault with the cooling fan on a 1992 740. My problem was associated with the relay located on the passenger's side front corner of the engine compartment.

From the driver's seat - you'll see a sensor in the upper right corner of the radiator. If you jump the two connections the fan should start. What you describe is classic failure of this switch (or the fan itself). Whether or not the problem is the switch -- do this -- put a cable tie or mechanics wire over the switch and around - or through - the core to secure the switch. The rubber grommet which holds the switch has been known to fail--launching the switch out of the radiator and causing a loss of coolant. -- Dave
