544 rear end help 444-544

I have a 62 544, mainly stock, has B20, 4 spd and original rear end. Last year I needed to replace the outer and inner rear end bearings. It had a slight whine and leaked out the axle. Ever since the rear whines even more. Starts whining at about 30mph. Very loud on acceleration, stops on de-acceleration. I have pics of the guts of it but hard to post here. Looking for advice, adjustments or parts to fix this. I like to drive it but it is very noisy.
Jim

Were the carrier and pinion bearings changed or just the axle bearings?

I changed the two outside axle bearings and the two inside axle bearings by carrier.

Any chance you changed the set up by misplacing shims under the carrier bearings?

Did you check the pattern on the ring gear after you changed the carrier bearings?

It has been a while, (about a year) since I changed them out. I know I had to change how the shims where set up on the outside of the axle shafts. The manual speaks of no shims on driver side but I had to shim a little to allow the bearing on the passenger side to engage enough to stay in. I did put the shims back in on the carrier. I may not have made sure the teeth where engaging the pinion teeth in the same place. This was the first time for me to try and repair this. I know the cylinder in the center with the hole in it that keeps the space is cracked.

When all was said and done, did you have a tiny bit of end play in each axle?

One time I set one up without adequate end play and so the axles were pressed against the center spacer too tight. That made for a noisy diff. Then the first time one wheel spun at a higher speed than the other wheel, the inner ends of the axles welded themselves to the spacer. The spacer had to be cut in half with a torch in order to pull the axles out.
