Given the lack of traffic....
I thought I’d post about a new, ok used crossmember I have on its way for my 1800E. Any tips or advice for refurbing a crossmember, and how to to R&R same? Particularly interested in how to support the engine while removing.

Before I replace a customers crossmember, I do the following to the replacement cepssmember.

1. Remove upper spring cups
2. Sandblast
3. Perimeter MIG weld the front support plates for the lower control arm pivot
bolt tube to the crossmember
4. Perimeter weld the rear support brackets for the lower control arm pivot
bolt tube to the crossmember
5. Paint the crossmember

I use the engine support bar pictured below. It is no where near perfect, but it will get the job done. I would prefer that the support brackets that go onto the fenders would be more adjustable as to the relative angle of the fenders.

And what do you attach the chains to? Headbolts? If so can they be loosened and retightened safely?

IIRC, we hung the motor by a single 3/8" diameter bolt in the front of the head.

The hole is in the front of the head towards the drivers side.

Thanks. I’ll give that a go.

Further question. I’m anticipating either bead blasting the crossmember or having it dipped. Any recommendations?

Bead blasting seems the easiest way to go, but wouldn’t hit the internal surfaces.

So far, all I have had done is sandblasting, re-enforcing and painting. We re-enforce the front and rear brackets for the lower control arm bolts and the upper shock towers.

I would expect acid dipping to cost more, take longer and would require the extra step of paint dipping to properly seal areas that can't be sprayed and the dipping should only be done after any re-enforcing.

I forgot to mention re-enforcing the upper shock towers as they are know weak points.

Eric, appreciate the responses. I’ve looked at those engine devices, seemed to be a little inadequate for the job, but good to know you’ve used them with success.
