Thinking about a radiator fan upgrade 200

Anyone did a 240 radiator fan conversion to electric?

Saw a 940 fan and shroud should fit. Assume electrical and sensor switch needs to be borrowed too just not sure where to place it on the block, rad or hose.
Would be nice to find a complete set. Seems theoretically easy enough.

    On our '90 745, the sensor was in the top of the radiator on the right side, rear.

    When the original fan seized, I had just put a new Volvo fan in our '90 744 TI and was getting rid of the wagon, so I found an aftermarket fan nearly the exact size as the Volvo one.

    I attached the fan to the shroud with about 8 pieces of repair wire - It fit and looked quite nice.

    The fan was reversible, so that care had to be taken to have it rotate in the proper direction.

      If swapping in a used 940 electric fan, please know the axial shaft of the fan passes through, I guess, like with the 240 electric pusher fans, a sintered (cintered?) housing or bushing, (unless on some form of ball bearing, sealed or not) and it is lubed by a heavy oil in a packing around it, so, you wanna clean that up and lube it really well with some manner of quality synthetic lube. I used mobil 1 15W50 for electric fans.

      The sintering makes small holes through the material so the so the oil passes through and keeps the turning axial shaft lubed.

      Also, some or all of these electric fans use brushes. And they wear, like alternator or wiper motor brushes.

      I'd keep the water pump fan. Yeah, like CB says, an all metal three row radiator as you need it. If used, get your trusted auto radiator shop to boil it out and pressure test it.

          Yet Norway taxes more progressively and is not to hard hittin' on citizen earnings. Damned Microsoft and Nokia and runin' Nokia.

          Just like the Volvo Group AB is Sweden selling off the Volvo Cars to Ford.

          Yeah, so, like when I'm screwing up an elbow that still hurts painfully so today on consume, consume, consume Friday, after that muffler replace between Sundae and Mundae, well, yeah, I had to work around the cheapie trailer hitch secured to the rear bumper cartridge housing bolts.

          So, for the silly iPd exhaust Turbo sport exhaust I'm preserving on this 1992 240 GL, I had to remove and install upside down the rear most long bolt on the (as you sit in it) car right side so the dumb fat S-shape tail pipe can install straight.

          I'll stick with the water pump fan. No need for such a sucking electric fan failure. (And that does happen.)

          A relative had bought a flex fan upgrade for his 1979 Volvo 245 DL rodbrun color BW55 from iPd when we resided in Portland, OR (Are-We-Gone. Organ. Or-uh-gone. Goofy, like CA and NY states.)

          So, it had four long bolts, a cast aluminum mount between the water pump pulley, and the flex fan. I installed it using my 3/8" inch micro torque wrench.

          IN a few months, the poorly casted mount had fracture the water pump pulley through the bolt holes.

          It did make a neat sound. Though with the over heat once or twice, I was tasked to replace the cylinder head gasket. At least Portland in 1990 or so had some great pro-Volvo machine shops. Best milled and machined head I'd found. They allslow welded a crack in the #3 or #4 exhaust port.

          All I wanna do now on two of mine is replace the exhaust manifold gaskets and studs. And inspect, clean, and hopefully repack the rear wheel bearings.

          I love making Park Muckerberg munny each time I log in to sheet faced book. And I myself and not sheet faced. Wants a sheet faced. Yet hates boooooooze. Hates, hates, hates booooooze.

          Yet I digress away from this thread save for the iPd flex fan story.

          I do have several 240 radiator / condenser pusher fans that need a clean and re-lube or get tossed in the massive landfill.

    Done this before and my advice is that unless your adding a turbo and need room for an intercooler/etc its hardly worth the effort. The mechanical fan is reliable and contributes to the durability of the b230.

    You should contact Mr Nabisco. He is showing off a bunch of his modifications at the location below.
    He can give you the pros and cons of doing it. One being trying to sell them as a group package.

    I'm sure he would sell you everything around the fan and behind it along with his extra ponies, he bragging about.

    This is to Mr. Nabisco for the most part. I do not intend to insult him but just tell my perspective.

    He has spent a lot of money on the thrills of modifying things. This while the most of us lose our money doing normal maintenance items especially, over the years paying someone else to do the work.
    It all ends up being some money not recoverable.
    These things are paid for at a retail level and later sold at the wholesale level. It's life, Just like for our nations farmers. They Pay retail for seeds and farm equipment. Then in turn, sell the end result to wholesale bidders or loose out at an auction.
    Our farmers must like what do and I'm thankful.

    There are those who are looking a normal car that exhibits itself as being well taking care of. Most of these people pay up better to avoid the fanfares of surprises. That's me for the most part as I try to appreciate someone's effort to keep things nice against Father Time!
    I modify things a liitle but I appreciate originality.

    Then there is a lot smaller group of consumers that Mr. Nabisco and maybe you are in. This makes the aftermarket go round and untilizes innovational ideas. Electric fans or coolant recovery bottles were not on earlier cars.
    It's not all bad if you realize some limits.

    The limit is just you have to find that person who is different enough to want an orange or purple car. That's a little exaggerated but manufactures spend big bucks on building cars that fit the largest crowd of buyers on the target plate. There are compromises made throughout the whole car so in short of building your own car at a greater expense, than most hobbies afford, losses have to be expected.

    All said and done cars are the worst investment you can ever make in life with money. So as long as you play with them, like the toys of our youth, we live past them and that makes them worthy to us!

      Wow. Mr. Nabisco is getting lots of hits here. lol. Guess that's what one gets for posting a "high performance" rust-bucket on CL. Hope he finds himself a buyer who has an west coast shell to do a Frankenstein.

      I hear you, as I am also a guy that tries to keep it original.

      Just noticed this past fall that my 93 240 heated up on the highway going uphill and thought of swapping out the fan clutch. Had the coolant, thermostat replaced last year. Looked good then. Took out the clutch, warmed it up and didn't notice any change in clutch resistance at all. It is not loose or free spinning. Just 1 resistance speed. Does not lockup. Weather cooled off and no more gauge creeping up. Guess I will just replace the clutch in spring. Perhaps even bypass the comp board.

      Keeping it running and as much original and rust free as possible is goal.
      I only improved on handling with poly low control arm bushings and lots of replacement front end and rear end suspension work.

      No crazy coil-overs or heavy drag parts in my mostly stock 0-60 capable brick.

      I live in CT farm country! Lots of poor farmers selling their premium products wholesale. :)
