Idle Compensation for A/C 1800 1972

Hi all.....

I have a 72 1800 E with a Volvo A/C unit, likely installed at the port upon its arrival.

At this point, the only way to compensate for the A/C's draw on the system is to raise the resting idle with the throttle set screw to 1800 (too high for my taste and the car's efficiency).....

Does this model have an independent solenoid that performs this function, and if so, where would I find it.....

Thx, Z3po (Larry) lrubin555@gmail.com

Idle Compensation for A/C 1800 1970

In the event you don't come up with a factory solution, I have something that might be able to help you out. Despite replacing my 35W alternator with a 55W'er, I had a problem with my idle dropping when I turned on the headlights, so I fitted a small solenoid air valve (couple of bucks on eBay) with a filtered input. I connected the solenoid to the parking light hot wire, so when the lights switch on, the valve opens, additional air is admitted and the idle returns to normal. You can moderate the amount of input air by modifying the size of the input opening. Happy to send you a photo if you desire.

The 2 parts pictured below were included with the original Volvo air conditioning kits for 4 cylinder D-jet engines.

The plastic fitting was installed in the 2 hoses connected to the auxiliary air slide and the intake manifold and the solenoid screws into the plastic fitting and 1 pole is wired to the A/C clutch wire and the other to ground.

I think I have a good used plastic fitting.

I've seen versions where the "H" fitting incorporated an adjustment knob so that you could regulate how much the idle rose when the solenoid clicked open. However, my experience was that the solenoid itself never seemed to allow enough bypass airflow to provide a really adequate (high enough/smooth enough) idle speed, especially with the York compressor. It might be high enough for a rotary type compressor.

Eric, do know if the holes in the solenoid can be drilled out larger, or additional holes added in order to provide a larger idle correction?
