Battery getting weak...to weak to last the winter '87 245 200

So for all of you out there facing a battery purchase.

The Interstate Battery, MT 47 that I bought in Jan 2007...I think is was @ $85 back then.

Getting another Interstate.
MT 47-H5, which is the new part number - $124
Other choice is the PF 47-H5-6, $89.
The diff being the MT is the top of the line, the PF is second best.

Prob getting the PF, as the car is garaged most of the week and driven about 3K a year.

I know Wal mart sell Volvo type European style batterys, probably significantly cheaper. Menards Lumber have sold them, best with 11% rebate, you install, AAP (ADVANCE) sell them. Check Retailmenot to see discounts, 20-50% off per past performance, must order and pay on line, select local store, pick it up...you cannot buy at store, they will install, also check Home Depot, they have had very good prices, Interstate have always been the most expensive when I checked.

I actually started this post as a recommendation for Interstate batteries.

I've bought cheaper batteries over the years and they always lasted thru or a tad beyond the warrenty period.
So, if it was stamped a 60 Month bat, a few months after the 5Y clock, it died.

as said this Interstate has been in the car for 10Y 10months. It's was stamped as a 75 Month battery. 75M = 6yrs 3months.

It's been warmer here the past few days, so a got around doing a pre-winter tune up. Put in new cap/rotor, cleaned up the posts and cnxts on the battery, checked the fluid level and ended up adding 8oz of distilled water across the 6 cells.

Started up much better, but then I'll have to wait for the cold again. I have a trickle charger that I put on during the coldest weather. But if it dies I'm driving to the distribution warehouse in Westminster and buying another one. The not-top-of-the-line battery is $89 and actually has a higher CCA - 630, than the one I have now 580CCA.

        Hi CB,

I get that you like Interstate batteries.
Johnson Controls claim they have a better technology in the making of their "wrought lead."
I think it's good inventory CONTROL that helps!

I used to like Costco's Kirkland batteries for standing up to the test of time. They seem to always go past their warranty time periods. They Had my business for years!
In my case, way past! I too, use float chargers anytime the car is parked for longer than a week.
By using this method I have taken lots of different brands longer than they should have gone. I babied one along for 16 years in my oldest around town car. It finally got me at a Walmart. I'm now a proud owner a "Easy Start" with no mention of who makes it. The price a wee bit (10%) higher than Costco but it's dated and their turn over is as good!
When you get bit, you just go with a grin and bear the walk back into at least the next best store in my little town. Not an Auto Zone, who likely sells the same goods for more. It feels like a Macy's to me?

Now for sometime, Costco's Kirkland is now their replacement is Interstate that are made by the same company Johnson Controls!
They run the same price or less than you quoted. The less part come in if you don't want to pay for the special bottom of the casing that fits only nineties cars that you the clip for the battery hold down. I think there was a five dollar or plus difference.

Costco beats up on Interstate dealers prices because, as I was told, that Costco buys them in larger lots by contract.
They buy bulk with no returns ever going back to Johnson Controls.
If a battery goes bad under replacement warranty, Costco eats it towards recycle. No haggles no paper work with Johnson Controls.
They must know the odds that their batteries are that good? Costco's Past contracts with them during the Kirkland days gave them their edge.

JC also make batteries for Walmart to now. That my understanding anyways.
Walmarts lawn tractor batteries have just a tiny bit less (3 months less) instant replacement warranty, than Costco's same Interstate battery but the price is the same?
So I go with my Costco card incentives!

Interstate do have trucks to exchange batteries with auto parts houses on a regular basis. It's the only company I see service shops and stores. Maybe back East there are more vendors, I don't know.
What I have noticed with other stores carrying batteries you have to watch out how long they sit on the shelf! They don't keep any kind of charging system on their supplies.

This is where I think the likes of Exide Corp and East Penn manufacturing, with plenty of brand labels they make, are losing some battles with Johnson Controls.
A battery sitting on a shelf discharges and can lead to an early sulphate failure. Of course that's, on your nickel, five years down the road!

Johnson Control and Exide have been battling for years and Exide darn near went bankrupt due to management errors.
Exide has made batteries for Caterpillar, John Deere and other major manufacturers since the turn of the century.

It is the fights over contracts and winning them that puts the beans in the soup!

        Phil

I'll report back to track if it makes it thru the winter at least to Jan 2018...11Years

you may find this interesting. Bat Tech

Or then again. Who will live to tell the stor....write the HisStory. THE Nicoli Tesla or Mr. Edison) Eddie won. Today's battle was won by Musk and all the Lith proponents as Fisk and the Graphene burned out.

          However---is Graphene back?

As Gubamints around the world are inline Mandating Electric Vehicles by 20XX. Nothing like Da Law to kill the internal cumbustion engine. Electrics for city dwellers if fine...but to force it on the hinterland dwellers.

i also use interstate batteries with one alteration.

i attach a 20 dollar battery desulfator to all batteries in cars.

in fact the current interstate in my daily driver i also purchased in 2007 and works in as new condition. interstates tend to sulfate up more quickly than other brands but respond well to desulfating then last 15 years or more.... effortlessly

find a desulfator on ebay, preferably one direct from china and buy it.

Battery getting weak...to weak to last the winter '87 245 200

the reason that I think this battery is dying is that for the last 4 or so years, I really don't drive long distances on the highway regularly. Used to run 160-350M on a weekend. These days, if I do a 40M round trip...

I'll check out the desulfating. The thing still has juice, but this past week it dropped to 19deg one night, then the low 20s the next, and when I started it that second day it fired up but not the way is normally does. The garage is unheated.

But then again almost 11yrs...10 and 10months, is not bad...less than $8 a year.

if you buy as desulfator as suggested and remove the battery bringing into a warm room in your house or basement attach the desulfator along with a trickle charger and in 2-3 weeks your battery will be renewed to near condition
