Heater core? 200

My 78 245 blew the head gasket late last winter. Head was cracked and replaced, she's running great. Noticed wet driver's side floor, it's antifreeze. Seems fine assuming as long as I don't turn on the heat. Got busy, summer past, Getting cold, assuming I cannot use heat, I shiver my way to work. Finally open up the panels and I see 1 clear drip of antifreeze at the bottom of the blower motor cover, and 1 drop on the wiring nearby. Start the car, let it warm up, drive it down the highway 7 miles at 65+, heat and blower on full blast, come home and no drips. I guess my question is, could the wet on the floor be from when the head gasket blew? I know it's wishful thinking, wanted to pick your brains. Thank you!!

I think you need to have the system pressure tested to be sure. If the core is bad you don't want to find out deep into winter. If you aren't squeamish about using shortcuts the core on a '78 is not too hard to do -- I had to replace a clogged core in my '76 265 V8 years ago. Having the speaker grille on top makes it much easier and by cutting the housing open you can slip the core out to the left side-- no need to extract the entire heater matrix.

You slipped it out to the LEFT side ? I would think that the RIGHT would be easier, away from the instrument cluster, pedals and steering column. The ones I have seen done this way were done by cutting open the RIGHT side. Would love to know more about your experience in doing this job. You're right, the speaker grill on top helps a ton with access to the hoses.

Mike--of course you are entirely correct - I meant RIGHT side. -- Dave

hi heck- curious as hell about your repair. thought to replace the core and the blower motor you had to go through hell on the rox dismantling most of the dashboard guts to get to them. so you cut a hole in the firewall on the right side , go through the speaker grill on the top of the dash board and remove from there? dont think this would work on my 92 245- no speaker grill on the db. speakers(4) in the doors. thanks ton oldduke

Correct. The earlier models, with the speaker grill on top, allow a clear path to the hose fittings on the top of the heater core. Also, you do NOT cut into the firewall. You do the access from under the dash. Remove the glove box, outer air channels and blower motor fan wheel to expose the side of the heater box. From there it is fairly clear where to cut to get access to enable you to slide out the heater core.

Well, that sounds like a WHOLE bunch of fun.. I've done blower motors in the past so I'm sure I can manage. I took a look at it this morning after driving and I did see a wet spot, again on the right side right below the heater control. I reach up there but still can't find where the antifreeze is coming from. Gotta bite the bullet and get it done. Thanks for your advice, at least I know I don't want to wait. I'm not driving the 142in the snow :)

Heater control diaphragm could be leaking, happened on my 240s two times.

I would think a heater core would leak inside the the heater box and drain under the car near the bell housing, not inside the car.

Inside leak could also be caused by heater core piping or hoses.

Myself I would drive the car with loose cap (electric tape over it) on coolant plastic tank in order to help having no pressure on the system. In winter it does not matter and could help you to gain some time.

I drive year round with little or no pressure on cooling system of both of my 240. That is Montreal area.

when my heater core was leaking the leak was under the car, I could see it on the garage floor. It came out that drain hose that is there for the AirCond condensation. Check out that that hose is not clogged or pinched. If it is clear then the leak from the heater core shud be seen under the car.

Also, if the core is leaking Coolant and you put the heat on full blast with the Defroster Vents open, the inside of the windsheild shud fog up and that fog will be slimy and hard to wipe off, not like normal water-vapor fog. If you don't get this Coolant fog - resulting from the leaking coolant on the heater core getting vaporized, Then you may not have a leaking core at all.
