Widscreen wiper fail 900 1993

Hi guys, time to ask another question having read the excellent faq.

LHS (passenger UK) wiper stopped working this afternoon in the rain, i just moved it down (easily) and carried on with just the one. No adverse noises. Having looked now the rains stopped its not the loose nut i was hoping for, so before i start the stripdown in the street in the dark, do you think its the cable? Is that easy to fix? Can i use bicycle parts or is it a hard to find expensive part. Or could it be another part of the mechanism.

Any advice welcome

After removing the wipers and the flexible trim from around the attachment points you need to remove three bolts (10mm socket) to remove the cowl and have a look.

A bolt in each forward corner of the metal panel and one centered on the firewall.

The mechanism doesn't use cables, but rather ridged metal arms. Perhaps one of yours has come loose?

Hi Randall, thanks for swift reply. Just pulled the mechanism which might be a bit different for UK models. RHS spindle is the motor driven one and LHS (passenger) is driven by cable driven eccentric cam. Assembly is held in well by 2 12mm headed bolts below windshield and braced by a tang which sits in slot at bottom.

Cable has snapped due to old age. Will now try and source replacement or make one up.

      Cheers

All fixed now, snapped cable renewed using bicycle parts. You can cut down 5A choc block electrical connectors to make cable securing bits!

          Hi Pierso,

I'm unsure of the specific design of the 900-series wiper motors.

You probably read this FAQ page in wipers:
          https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/ElectricalWipers.htm

Yet the spindles (or drive shaft) to which the wiper blades secure pass through a housing. At the bottom end of each spindle is an eccentric cam to which the cable secures.

The rotating spindle passes through a housing. The rotating spindle and housing need some manner of lubricant in time as the factory pressed in grease dries out.

See Art Benstein's video. Makes me laugh, the honking sound:

Volvo 240 wiper drive needs lube

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i98fHSExTf4

You can drop the wiper drive shaft / spindle down, and repack with grease.

With wiper arm removed, I drip down some Mobile 1 15 W 50 between the spindle / drive shaft and the housing and operate the wiper motor to enhance capillary action so the oil gets sucks into the space. Though maybe better to remove, clean, and treat with grease.

          Hope that helps.

          Questions?

          Happy Holidays.

Thanks kittysgreyvolvo, i lubed the shaft for the eccentric for the passenger side with spray chain lube but was in a hurry so didn't split the other side down. Im going to take the assembly out again soon to do a mod on the cable i made so will lube drivers side then. The mod will be to put an m5 cable adjuster on the new cable so i can tension it properly as now the cables bedded in it makes a gdunk noise when the wipers change direction. I must take some pics which will be useful for others.
            Thanks for your input

            Pierso
