M40 Transmission Flange 444-544

I have been doing a B20 / M40 upgrade on my 1961 PV 544. Engine and trans have been installed, only to find that the transmission's rear flange is too large and will not match up to my original driveshaft. I had a four speed B16 transmission in the car. My question is, will the rear B16 flange interchange with my M40 rear transmission flange? Any input would much be appreciated.

Your B16 flange won't work. The M4 and early M40s have coarse splines for the transmission output flanges and were only compatible with the smaller diameter flanges.

You obviously have a later M40 as those came with either small and large diameter driveshaft flanges and those use a fine spline driveshaft flanges.

Fortunately, what you need is pretty easy to find as they are the same flanges as were used on Dana 30 rear ends used in Volvos minus the removable dust shield.

I should have 1 in stock for $30.00 plus shipping.

That's great Eric. I'll give you a call Monday morning about purchasing that flange.

Thanks, Phil
