Air Mass Meter Options 200 1989

After being out of Volvo for a little while, I bought a 1985 245 wagon for my middle son two years ago. It has been going well, but started stalling in the morning when started up. I suspected the AMM as I could wiggle the connection and make the idle change. Yesterday I bought a 1989 245 wagon with a M47 5 speed transmission with a bad alternator and battery. I started it with a boost box several times (I work in a European shop now, since 2009). It runs perfectly, so I swapped the AMMs out since my son is about to start college and the 85 now runs perfectly and the 89 stumbles on cold start, verifying my suspicions the AMM is bad. I have been out of the 240 scene for years, and I see new air mass meters for $400 on worldpac, and I see Spectra brand that are new style air mass meters with the proper connection and threaded boss for the 2.3 for substantially cheaper on eBay. How well do these work? I bought the 89 for an everyday beater, so I don't want to spend a bunch on a new AMM at this time if one of the Spectras will work. And I would not mind a good used one as I can instantly plug it in and see if it works but I don't see those like I used to.

Air Mass Meter Options - Air Filter Box Preheater Control .... 200 1989

In the air filter box is the flappy valve that lets in the ambient (cold air) intake or preheated air. Controlled by a thermostat.

They all fail and let in hot air only through the silver preheat hose. It can reek havoc on an otherwise innocent AMM / MAF.

This is OEM from FCP Euro made by Whaler, or at least was OEM. I dunno.

        What FCP Calls Volvo OEM:

Also, a list that matches the ECU you have with the Bosch PN AMM / MAF:

Video of the air filter box flappy valve assembly removed from the forward air filter box part.

Arkansas does not test automobiles for emissions or safety. In such instance, as I have done, is to remove the silver accordion hose and remove the air filter flappy valve assembly complete. Keep the heat shield on the exhaust manifold. Improves low end throttle response ever so slightly.

Though with a new thermostat, hastens the cooler-cold weather warm-up interval, though you have to check that the thermostat continues to work properly over time through inspection, as when you perform air filter replacement, recurringly or no more than two years (I guess?).

        Questions?

        Hope that helps.

Good used tested AMM are the way to go, either from a junk yard or ebay.

The last 3 digits for the 89 are 016.

The last 3 digits for the 85 are 007, they have the same connector and some people have used them interchangeably but I have not had much success doing that.
