Tachometer install, not working... 200 1990

Sages,

Today I installed a large tachometer and small clock in my 1990, 240 wagon.

I've done this procedure twice before, so I'm well versed in how it is done.

Well I expected the small clock to not work as this whole assembly was out of a 1986 245, and given its age, I figured it would be dead. Well much to my surprise, the clock is currently alive and kicking, but the tachometer was DOA!

I've at least verified that the wiring coming off the coil to the back of the tachometer is good, but still I get nothing.

Has anyone else out there encountered something like this before? I haven't dug into the tachometer yet, but will soon. Am I possibly looking at a cold solder joint that has just bit me in the butt?

Any ideas on this one and where to start are greatly appreciated, and I do plan to order two new 100uF capacitors for the small clock as we all know, 27 year old capacitors are going to fail, its not a matter of 'if', but 'when'.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

    Thanks VolvoDad!

That's a great idea! I'll give it a go this weekend.

I was also able to find Art's schematic of it and how it is layed out.

I'll give your method a go before cracking it open.

I'll let you know know what I find out.

    Regards,

    Matt

I've pulled a few junkyard tachs from 240's in the past. To check before installing (or putting them on eBay), I place the tach on the slam panel by the battery, and use little jumper wires with alligator clips to connect the tach's proper terminals to battery pos and neg, and its #1 terminal to the coil's #1. This of course bypasses all the car's internal wiring and the instrument cluster's copper traces and pins, and leaves the tach as the only suspect.

Then make sure nothing is touching chassis metal and start the engine. I've had about 1 out of 4 prove bad! I also check accuracy using an automotive multimeter with an inductive pickup on a spark plug wire. I've learned that those old 240 tach's are quite accurate - when they work.

Finally tried it tonight and there was no response.

Now I'm going to take it apart and see what I see.

      Hopefully I can fix it.

      Thanks again,

      Matt
