Ok , decided to start a new thread to hopefully get my question answered :). I have an 87 244, would like to install a parallel flow condenser in my car. From other threads, they say a P34422p condenser will fit, although the inlet and outlet are in different positions than my condenser. "Erico" says it fits and lowered his cabin temp by 5 degrees. Also said he had new hoses made up to accommodate the different inlet and outlet positions. However, many other Threads say that the condenser is ONLY for a 93 and that Volvo changed the thread pitch on the inlet and outlet fittings etc. No one posted any follow up information as far as I could tell. Has anyone done this install? Need some help, burning up down here :(.

Scott,
The Parallel flow condenser started to be used in 91', however it is different than the one in the 93' model year. Why? Because in 93' Volvo moved from R12 to R134a.
If you are converting your car to run on 134a, then use the 93' condenser as it was designed to work with R134a, if not, then use the condenser form 91-92 as they were designed to run on R12.
The threads on all three of these years are the same AND they are different from your year model, so you will need to have hoses made up to make it work.
Another route, though not for the faint of heart is to completely remove your entire A/C system and replace with one from a 91, 92, or 93 system and making sure that you use the condenser from the 93 so that you are running all R134a compatible parts.
I'm slowly, and I do mean slowly collecting parts as these cars are becoming harder and harder to find in the PNP, to convert my sons 90' over to R134a using all the right parts. it is alot of work, but it will be worth it in the end.
Good luck,
Matt

Thank you Matt ! You answered my question. The threads are different from mine. But need to get hoses made anyway. I am going with 134 so I need to by a 93 only? All the ones listed seem to be listed as 1991-1993. I guess any will be better than my 1987 one. Does it matter where I have the high pressure and low pressure fittings? Thought I would put the high pressure in the hose behind the grill since the grill is easy to remove, would be easy to get to. Thought about putting the low pressure/ fill fitting on the hose between the firewall and the cam cover, again, where it is easy to get to. Does it matter where I put the fitting, as long as it's downstream of the evaporator and before the compressor.? Or does it need to be close to the compressor? My new compressor has no ports of course. Sorry for all the questions Thanks again :)

Scott,
So I took some pictures which I have not posted yet, but will.
Here is the scoop.
The R134a condenser has a top and bottom connection. The top connection is the high side directly from the compressor. The bottom connector is the high side going to the evaporator.
I'll post pictures when I have more time. I need to chill, no pun intended as I just spent the past four days swapping out M-47s in two of my 240's. I'm exhausted.

Encourage you to buy a contemporary condenser - the largest you can fit in the space. The new ones are more efficient than older style condensers. The more heat you reject, the less work the rest of the system will have to do. Classic auto air and Vintage Air sell them. I believe I selected a 15" x 21" unit for my Classic Auto Air "kit". Top connection to compessor (hi press/hot), low connection to exp valve/evaporator (low press/cold). My compressor connection is a #6, exp valve connection a #8....if you have to have hoses made anyway. Suction side is the largest - a #10. Lastly, mount the condenser flush against rad - I used some thin foam to seal/cushion. This will assure that all air pulled (or pushed) across the rad also comes across the condenser.

I assume you mean on the condenser? If so, then yes. I have them in my garage attic at the moment and can not get to them but will as soon as I can move my 89' out of the way. There is an upper and lower connection. Once I get one out and its appropriate hoses I will tell you.

I do not have a good answer for you here, though I believe someone else here has asked the same question just recently and was told where to put the fill ports. When I say recently, I mean with in the last couple of weeks so you should be able to scroll back and find the discussion.
As soon as I can get to the condenser I'll post back.

....and another route, even more not for the faint of heart, is to completely remove the entire Volvo HVAC system and replace it with a fully electronic aftermarket system of matched components - I used Classic Auto Air's Street Rod Cooler III system. 90-95F ambient with SE US humidity -- 36F vent temps....first time the car has been truly cool in the summertime since, well, ever.

May have to do that ! Would do it just to get rid of the blower motor ha ha

Very kind of you to take the time to post what you have done :). Do you remember if you put in a 1993 condenser or 91/92 ? Was wondering if the thread pitch on the 93 conderser is indeed different. Thanks again !

I found my original order from FCP and it was a 1993 condenser.

Thanks for the information. Your list looks normal, Do you remember if the threads were different/ odd on the 93 condenser? Supposedly Volvo changed the thread pitch or something e

If I remember correctly it wasn't that the thread pitch was different but a different angle fitting was needed at the condenser. Fittings come in various angles such as 45,90,180,etc and you need to choose the correct angle and size for the application. The following fitting I also purchased but wasn't included in the first list posted.
Ordered: 1 Shipped: 1 C1310 # 12 - # 10 90 Degree O-ring Fitting $8.00

Thanks for taking the time to respond :). Did you put ports in your hoses? Thought I would put a port to measure the high side pressure in the hose where it runs behind the grill, easy enough to take out. Or I guess I could get a fitting that has one in it, and put it just before it attaches to the top conderser inlet. Thought about putting, the low pressure port/ fill on the hose from the evaporator maybe just after the bracket on the cam cover before it goes to the compressor. My compressor has no fill ports behind an R134. Unit.

I used this kit in addition to the 1993 condenser. I had got it on EBAY years ago for cheap. You can see it also came with a fill port. Looking at my parts list I made 2 #6 hoses so the port was likely in the middle. Don't remember putting in a port for the high side. Not sure its necessary. An AC expert would know better than me.
