Over drive into 445--Rear Trans Mount 444-544

Does the rear trans mount remain in the stock location with the O/D on it, I realize the other mods needed but wondered on this. Seems like it would be the stock location as for s B18/m40 Thanks, Ken

Thanks. Thinking about this conversion, the history of this445: originally a B16, PO converted to B18, and I have a B20 w/ OD from a '73. Still should bolt up I am thinkin. Ken

You're going to want to use the( original B16) motormount brackets bolted to your B20 - B16 and B18 cross members have different locations for the motormounts.

Also, the B16 radiator plumbing is different. Before I was able to find a B18 nose and radiator, I modified my B16 radiator and still have that if you want one to bolt in without making the change to yours. I see that you are in Tampa - I'm in NYC.

Over drive into 445--More mods needed? 444-544

Thanks, Gents. I am bench-top mechanicing now ,need to get into storage and under the 445 and check the current configuration. The fellow had a B18 544, got rear-ended 40 years back and acquired the 445 w/front end damage and installed the B18 and front clip off the coupe. A '59 445, it had been in an overseas shipping container for 15 years when I got it, Another Volvo tale.

ON the overdrive install--the driveshaft will need to be cut?-or-if 2 piece, maybe get lucky and reassemble? Does the older long shifter fit the 73 tranny which has the later offset shifter?

Appreciate the comments and sharing the expertise. Ken

The front half of the driveshaft will need to be shortened and the whole 2 piece driveshaft should be balanced afterwards. I strongly suggest you find a shop with the proper driveshaft balancing equipment.

Any M40/M41 shift cover can be bolted on, so the early M40/M41 shift covers with the long chrome handle will work. However, you may have to drill and tap your old cover if you want to install the overdrive lockout switch.

FYI, there are 2 sizes for the output flange for the "J" overdrives, so check and see if your driveshaft flange is the same size.

The transmission mount position remains the same -- M40/M41.--Dave

The M41 will bolt in except for the body modifications to the tunnel that are necessary for clearance.

The overdrive will hit the body and you will need to replace a section of the tunnel to make it wider.

      I did this conversion to a customer's 1961 P210 about 15 years ago.
