Hi all
Long time
I need to identify the steering rack in my 95 940 it looks to be a Volvo Original Part and the part number is
P9127308 on a white sticker on the rack itself.
I need inner tie rods.
Thanks for taking the time
Regards
Mike

Dear hardknocks!,

Hope you're well. I confirm Amarin's conclusion: Volvo VADIS - a superseded dealer parts/service database - shows that Part #9127308 is for use with a CAM/TRW rack.

The inner tie rods (steering rods) are Part #9140504. These cost about $85 at a North American Volvo dealer. There are after-market units available at www.fcpgroton.com or www.rockauto.com.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Its a CAM/TRW type rack 900

Hi,

Part #9127308 refers to CAM/TRW type steering rack. As such you need CAM/TRW compatible inner tie rods i.e a CAM inner tie rods could be used on TRW steering rack (and vice versa).

Google "volvo 940 steering CAM inner tie rods" or "volvo 940 steering TRW inner tie rods" and you'll see many choices in terms of price/quality.

Hope this helps,
Amarin.

Just curious, Amarin, for argument's sake... how did you determine the part number refers to a CAM rack? My brief google attempt shows the number NLA and REPLACED by a CAM rack. I was hoping VADIS would reveal whether it was KOYO or CAM or TRW and wishing lucid was around to "shed light" on it. Spook might know, too.

Edit: Spoke too soon. There's Spook with the answer and source!

Hi Art,

Googling the part # would only results in steering rack listing. Of the listed results I would try to find an eBay link (of that same part #) where the seller would also NAME/IDENTIFY the steering rack. Then I would double check this with another eBay seller and so on...

I don't have VADIS with me. Cross-checking between eBay sellers usually reliable IME. I choose sellers with highest ratings.

Regards,
Amarin.

Dear Art Benstein,

Hope you're well. Beware: some e-Bay sellers' parts compatibility information is simply wrong, e.g., many incorrectly presume interchange among: (a) 1991-95 940 and 960 instrument clusters; (b) fuel tank send units among 740s and 940s; (c) sun visors for 940s (mounts differ); (d) airbag components, etc.

I've come to trust Volvo VADIS, because my copy - 2004 edition - was prepared nearly a decade after the 940 was last sold in North America. By then, part numbers had "stabilized", i.e., did not need very often to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Reliable information 900

Hi Spook,

(smile)

Yes, I'm very much aware ebay sellers don't have the interchange correctly researched in many instances. Trying to gauge how accurate they are by feedback scores, or total sales made, is much like trying to gauge the truth of information given by responders in this and other forums by their post counts or Kitty-thumbs. My copy of VADIS is 2005 and locked out since April 30 unless I want to move it to an old machine where I can set the OS date back a few years.

But the forum is still helpful to those able to sort the wheat from the chaff, and I imagine ebay interchange info can still be of some use with enough cross-referencing and critical analysis. Even so, the parts fiche and VADIS alike do have errors and omissions, I've found, though few and far between.

Dear Art Benstein,

Hope you're well. VADIS requies XP. XP can run on a "new computer", i.e., one with a 64-bit chipset and Win 7, if a "Virtual Machine" is set up.

The Virtual Machine software is available gratis from Oracle Corp. One simply needs to have enough storage capacity and RAM.
See https://www.howtogeek.com/56158/beginner-how-to-create-a-virtual-machine-in-windows-7-using-virtual-pc/ .

I do not know if a Virtual Machine will work as smoothly under Windows 10, as it does under Win 7.

You might want to consult a computer specialist to see if your machine will support a "virtual machine".

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
