rust in tight places

My 66 amazon has rust in some places I can't get into with a tool. This started with a fuel tank replacement, and has blossomed into a rust-hunt all around the inside of the trunk. Finding plenty, much more than I expected. Some places are obvious, like the quarter-size patches that came to light when I peeled up the stuck-on oem matting. These I gouge severely with a wire wheel on a battery drill. But I've started to notice that whenever I chip up some caulking (gray in color, and painted with oem paint) there's usually more rust. Some of the puttied places are tight narrow spaces, like between the back of the wheel well and the side wall. I have been using POR stuff on the engine and other parts. Can I just pour a dose of Metal Ready (POR phosphoric acid) down these crevices, followed by time to dry and then some POR paint? Going back outside now, chip, chip, chip.

    Hi Greezy,

    I've been having pretty good success with arresting rust in lapped seams with a product called 'Fluid Film'. It's a penetrating Lanolin based grease that doesn't dry out.

    If you search it on EBay you'll see what's available and some of the gear used to apply it. I buy it in a gallon can and invested in a special spray gun to which I can attach various hoses and wands to reach difficult places.

    I live in a high salt area and it's stopped further damage to rocker panels, the hood edge, door skin seams, and that rear quarter lap. I try to apply it yearly to winter vehicles

    It's difficult to renew the failed seal on lapped seams or pinch welds in areas where you don't have complete access, and throwing paint at it may only make things worse.

    I would also advise that you sand and use phosphoric acid on anything you've wire brushed before painting. Power brushing tends to glaze over the surface and makes a poor substrate for paint.

        thanks Peter and cb. wherever I clean with a wire wheel, I follow up with POR's degreaser and then phosphoric acid. And POR paint, couple coats at least. My car needs a paint job, just for how it looks, and when I get past a couple mechanical problems, then I will be dealing more with the rust and paint preparation. The Fluid you mention looks like a good thing to use after paint, to prevent future rust and maybe stop what is hidden. I will get some after paint and use it in those narrow places and places I can't see.

        By the way, what I did with the rust down in the tight places was to clean and poke and scrape as best I could with various tools and picks. And then degrease, phosphoric acid, and POR paint. I dribbled the paint along the top of the opening and then blew air down in there to minimize puddling. I also used the air hose while degreasing, to try and remove what I could. End result (that I can see) is pretty good, with four small holes that go through the metal. I am looking at fiberglass tape for those, and maybe bondo. Better ideas are welcome.
