Today after hearing a noise in the front right wheel area I pulled the wheel and examined the brake caliper. I'm no expert on brakes, by the way. I can see one of the springs that I think restrain the pad poking itself through the place where there is a little flat metal clip. Manipulating this with pliers ended the noise until I again applied the brakes. (Grinding or scraping sound) So I guess I have identified the problem. I had changed the pads 9 months ago so maybe I positioned something wrong? I will take it all apart this weekend but I would like to know if there is a reason for this problem popping up now. When I did the original job it seemed that I just needed to position everything as common sense would dictate and then the tension of the whole setup sort of holds it all in place. I recall that I changed the pads and applied some lubricant on the pins. Maybe I was supposed to do more than that? I had no problems until tonight. Any thoughts? Also, while on this subject I decided back then that I would soon change the calipers because the original ones are a bit of a crusty mess. Would anyone know whether I need to specify a particular type or will I just go and order Volvo 940 1995 calipers. Hopefully, this summer I will put on new calipers.

Hope you're well. By "clip" do you mean the "anti-rattle" spring attached at the top of the brake pad? If so, it is possible that one got bent and so does not keep the pad properly aligned.

It is a good idea - when changing brake pads - to clean the caliper slide pins and to apply to each one a thin coat of brake grease. This ensures that the caliper moves smoothly.

I'd not replace the factory -installed calipers, unless they seize and cannot be freed. It is better to use a wire brush to remove corrosion. If need be, you can - with access to compressed air - replace the caliper piston's seal and gasket. This takes some patience, but makes the caliper "as good as new".
