960 AC compressor goes on & off quickly 900

Hi awesome guys!

I have been trying to fix my AC on my 1995 Volvo 960. I bought the car couple of months ago and I am fixing everything it. Its the AC time now for me!

Initially when I started the AC and the compressor did not engage. I bought a Walmart R134 with a gauge in it, I filled a bit of the gas then jumped the ac relay and this started the ac compressor. I continued filling the R134 until got filled up to the green (optimum) indicator on the gauge. Now when starting the ac the compressor goes on and off approximately every 10-15 seconds, with the psi pressure gauge connected at low pressure filling nozzle, the reading goes 45-20 PSI with the compressor on and off, respectively.

The compressor seems trying cool the air, however, it disengage quickly. I hope there is a fix for this! Any input is much appreciated ;)

I did the fault code reading through the AC button, and it gave 111, assuming nothing is wrong.

I think it works!! Thank all of you guys ;). Indeed, I filled more refrigerant R134 into the low pressure valve next to the AC bottle, and the more I add, the longer the AC compressor stays on. The air inside was also getting cold! I just need to buy another can. The weather been terrible in Cleveland at the moment, I will wait until it get a bit hot.

    Thank you all.

Is there a large aluminium can (about 9x3.5 inch size) within the engine bay? If it is there then the AC is CCOT system. Standard method is to refill by weight.

For quick refilling purpose just continue to refill the system till the compressor doesn't cycle anymore (cycle means compressor turning on/off repeatedly). As you continue refilling the compressor should cycle less and less till no more i.e. constantly on. At same time the air at the vents should be cold. Get another fresh canister if one is not enough.

When the compressor stays constantly on the reading at the small gauge should be in green. This should read around 35psi if you refill at night with ambience temp 60C to 70C, or around 45psi if you refill at daytime with ambience temp 80C to 90C. Be sure to open all windows, blower max and engine runs at idle. When the system is near full (less cycling there) refill slowly to avoid overfilling. Entire refill process should take about 30mins to 45 mins.

    Hope this helps,
    Amarin.

That's great instruction, I am going to get another R134 can. And yes, I have the cylindrical aluminum bottle to which the filling nozzle is attached.
