Yep, in all the owner manuals for the years you list, the Volvo owner manual states "Type F".
Put mineral Dexron in there, as the Haynes manual incorrectly indicates in the specification, and you'll ruin the rack rather quickly, as I found out on my manual steering 1990 Volvo 240 DL wagon. Stupid, stewpid, stoopid me.
Yet other issues in Volvo doc, owner manual and factory green service manual, as to what fluid goes in that M47 manual trans - ain't "Type F", use Volvo spec oil, or Redline synthetic, or the like).
You could use a "Type F" synthetic. Yet many here use synthetic general "ATF" fluid like Mobile 1 without complaint, I guess.
Yep, you can splice in a filter on the low pressure return. Also, some will use a hanging magnet in the reservoir fluid to collect the micro metal bits.
Amsoil makes a synthetic "Type F" I use my 1991 240. Swapped the fluid out by spinning the pump pulley and draining the old oil from the low pressure return that was tipped into an oil collecting can I rigged up. Had to remove the AMM / MAF and associated piping to have access. Maybe you and other can do so mroe elegantly (without removing the AMM / MAF piping?)
Else, well, there you go.
Have you considered replacing the two hoses, specifically the high pressure hose, or having a hydraulic shop fabricate one up using the Volvo hardware at the ends?
Hope that helps.
Happy Friday (all day long)!
