Agreed. You can even shoot some juice like WD-40 or whatever you have just for diagnosis. The description of the sound is often "jet engine" so we seize on the carrier bearing for this complaint. But next time you hear it for a sustained time, test the comparative heat emanating from your front calipers and discs.
I once got this whistling complaint, beyond my hearing range, and it turned out to be a dragging caliper, which I wouldn't have thought of before you wrote about the resistance you feel. I think if the carrier bearing was actually slowing you down, the rubber ring around it would be smoking.
