odd whistling noise from carrier bearing?

I have an 92 240 wagon

it started making a strange whining noise when running at 50 mph and above after driving 5 minutes or so. It is not a grinding noise like a bearing or brake pad. It is not the hum from a fuel pump
issue. It is not the squeal of a belt slipping. It is more like an
electric whine that comes from the front of the passenger side. kind of like flying in a jet plane when decelerating or
a small electric motor spinning up to
high rpms until it gets to a steady high pitched whine. Then if I let
off the gas, it sounds like it is spinning down. When I try
revving the engine, while parked, to an equivalent rmp I do not get
the sound. I'm sure it's not the fuel pumps because I've just
replaced both and am very familiar with the pump noise. I'm also
familiar with belt squeals, brakes grinding and bearing noise and
that's not the type of noise I'm hearing.
Can it possibly be related to a service belt accessory bearing from not having the underpin under the bottom front since like many others was too lazy to put it back on? Some are mentioning the carrier belt on drive shaft but how can I be certain and what are the other symptoms? Sorry for so many questions and thank you for your help.

This is stumping me so any help will be appreciated.

Bad intake manifold gasket?

As Art indicated, it could be a stuck caliper. That certainly explains the resistance or lack of power. Yes, test for heat at the wheel.

Doubt it is the wheel bearing. Think you would feel that in the steering in addition to it getting hot.

You said it doesn't make the noise all the time. If it did make the noise all the time, based on your description above, you might have a leaking intake manifold gasket. Maybe it is in the beginning stages?? Even then I would think that you would hear something. Check around the engine compartment for vacuum leaks with a focus on the intake manifold gasket area.

My 90 244 exhibited the exact same symptoms when my intake manifold gasket went bad:

1. Noise came from the front passenger side
2. Sounded like a jet or similar
3. Lack of power

Only difference is that my car sounded like a jet all the time...

Bad intake manifold gasket?

I just did some maintenance to the brakes when greasing the bearings so i don't think it is a stuck caliper however i will check.

The whining noise is there at all times once the car is hot or after its been running for over 5 minutes from cold.
tomorrow i will do some of the items mentioned in the forums thanks to all

i had the exact same 'jet engine' sound, coming from the carrier bearing. my mechanic used some Wurth lube like this :

that was a couple of years ago. haven't heard a sound yet..

Is it worse when it is cold outside? Can you identify if the sound is coming from the middle or rear of the car? If so, it is probably the carrier support bearing. Some folks have been able to inject grease onto the bearing. Miraculously, I was able to get a straw mounted on a grease spray can through the rubber support and that quieted the bearing. Give it a try if you determine the noise is coming from the middle of the car. If the noise goes away you'll know...:)

Thanks Jwalker, i hear it coming from the front but not sure. The worst part is that the longer I drive the more the car slows down as if some resistance was keeping it back. Does that mean I'm probably too far along? and are there any other symptoms that would indicate it is the carrier bearing? like some play on the axle or something rather?

It may be your carrier bearing.

BUT BUT BUT....Really doubt that relatively small bearing could "slow down" the car...hold it back.

yes infact I was about to take a weekend trip some 500 miles away but decided to turn back after just 50 not just because the noise was unbarring but also because I felt I was getting passed by formula cars when in reality it was just regular traffic it was me traveling at 55 mph on highway....

took me a couple days to get ready, i greased the from bearings inner and outer, so i thought maybe i did something wrong but didn't sound lie bearing noise. would i be able to feel some play on the drive shaft if pull on it ? For now i'll just to as told, grease the carrier bearing but i too have a feeling something else is wrong

could it be that I tightened the castle nut on the wheel bearings too tight?

i remember stopping and feeling the hub cap with my fingers and it was warm but not hot, are you not to feel any heat at all from dust cap

Agreed. You can even shoot some juice like WD-40 or whatever you have just for diagnosis. The description of the sound is often "jet engine" so we seize on the carrier bearing for this complaint. But next time you hear it for a sustained time, test the comparative heat emanating from your front calipers and discs.

I once got this whistling complaint, beyond my hearing range, and it turned out to be a dragging caliper, which I wouldn't have thought of before you wrote about the resistance you feel. I think if the carrier bearing was actually slowing you down, the rubber ring around it would be smoking.
