Cigarette lighter outlet... 200 1991

All,

My cigarette lighter has an issue and I need some suggestions before diving into it.

The lighter that is in it actually works. I can push it in and the lighter pops out when it is HOT.

What does not work are the two different USB adapters that I tried. The adapters work in other cars, but not this one. Was 91' a special year???

Any thoughts before I go head long into this gremlin. I need to have it fixed in a week so I'm some what under the gun with work and all.

Thanks in advance for any and all help given.

Matt

    Fixed it!

Took it apart and used my Dremel. So much for the car being a non-smoker!

When I took it apart ashes went every where!

Nice to have it working fully so that I can charge a phone, or start a fire if I need to.

What Art said. The rivet in the centre gets corroded and makes poor contact. I've cleaned it up with a Dremel.

    Two answers:

    1) Using the lighter or other high-current accessory can create a spark-burned area on the contact. If this is the case, a small hunk of 1000-grit or similar glued to the end of a 3/4" dowel can help reach the problem.

    2) Unsure of what standards might apply to the physical form (depth) for a lighter socket, but I've found USB adapters that just don't reach far enough when fully seated to their rims. They are different. But no, 91 wasn't a "special" year for cigar lighting. Take some measurements.
