544 Rear end swap and differences 444-544

I have a 62 544 with a problematic rearend. I have located a 65 544 car that they are willing to part the rearend. I looked in the manuals but cannot really tell. Are they both the Dana 27 rearends? Do they mount the same? I have not driven to the parts car yet since it is 3 hours away. Wanted to know this information first.
Jim

Yes, it will fit and it "should" be a Dana/Spicer 27.

However be aware that there were 3 different rear ends that fit, ENV and Spicer 23 and Spicer 27 and I have seen more than 1 later 544 that should have a 27, but had been replaced with a used ENV or 23.

You can use either ENV or Spicer rear ends, but the bushings on the axle tubes are different sizes in case you find an ENV. Both styles of bushings are still available.

Also be aware the early Spicers are type 23 and later Spicers are type 27. They do use the same axle tube bushings, but most of the major internals are different.

"23" or "27" is cast into the webbing on the right rear facing side of the cast iron carrier housing.

The ENV rear end does not have a removable rear cover and is "dropout" design.

544 Rear end swap and differences--now a '57 444? 444-544

Eric, another puzzle. We have a '57 444, w/ 4-speed & B16, orig. from Norway.
We have to change the rear end on this one, and have access to several 544 parts cars, believe all are B16 cars. Will any of the 544 units bolt in to this old 444?
Thanks, with all due respect,we all appreciate your vast knowledge and willingness to share and source up the impossible parts. You are a pillar to the Brick Community.
Kayo.

Early B16 cars will almost certainly have the lower 4.56 back axle. Some late B16 cars will have the 4.10 axle. Generally speaking, unless you do the majority of your driving in hilly/mountainous areas, it's best to have the 4.10 for more relaxed cruising. Late cars with the 4.10 can be identified by the chassis number in the parts book if there isn't an ID tag under one of the diff cover bolts. Your car probably has the 4.56 axle now, so if you've driven it enough to have an opinion that it seems to be under geared, then the 4.10 is the one for you.

In the US, I have only seen the 4.56 rear end in B16 equipped PVs, and only the 4.11 in B18 cars. I had a 1961 PV544, and it had the 4.56 ratio.

If your chassis number is higher than 130942, than it should use the later style of suspension mounts which means you can use a 544 rear end.

Just remember there are 2 different axle bushings depending on which brand, Dana/Spicer or ENV.
