Blinking arrow and WSE switch! 900

Hi guys,

I have 1995 (manuf. late 1994) volvo 960. It is in limp mode (blinking arrow and mode selector switch (WSE) flashing. I had read the codes and they are:

A1 232 missing speed signal

A1 114 mode selector circuit faulty (not 313 for PNP).

The RPM, Speedometer cluster works normally, no engine light, no ABS lights. I drained and replaced the transmission fluid, earlier I got another code (332) faulty SL solenoid, which I replace with new one, and now this code is cleared.

I tested the green-gray wire from the instrument cluster to the TCM and showed continuity with resistance Ohms change from 1 to 0.01.

I cleaned the rear diff. sensor and it seems ok.

I cleaned the PNP switch and evened the teeth inside. although I didnt have any issues with getting out of park, no starting, or no reverse light.

I ordered WSE switch, put I am really puzzled now! The car has only 91000miles

Pull apart the two plastic wire plugs on the left hand side of the transmission you will have to be under the car to get to them. Clean up the contact points and check the wiring at the plugs.

There is a speed sensor Trans rpm speed sensor on the left side of the transmission.

Alright some progress and updates on 1995 Volvo 960 blinking arrow!

Previously I had A1 124 (mode selector circuit), A1 232 (missing speed signal) A3 155.

I replaced the WSE switch, and nothing happened. Once the ignition on "on" the S and E both are light up. So I unpluged the WSE and checked the voltage by DVOM as the red cable getting power from the lighter wire while the black wire into the WSE wires. I found out all reading around 12V which is incorrect, therefore I concluded there is A TCM short. I replaced the TCM and now the 124 is cleared!

The last problem is code 232 missing speed signal, and 155 axle sensor. It is kind of puzzling cause the speedo works normal and no ABS light. If I unplug the rear diff sensor the speedo would stop and the ABS light will show up.

I have cleaned the the tranny side wires and checked the RPM sensor and its working with normal resistance.

Any tranny issues before it went into limp home mode?

Checked the oil and was dark but not burnt. Cleaned the pan and put new oil. Will do another drain and filter replacement. Now I have only the missing speed signal A1 232, A3 155. I have replaced the TCM (was shorted giving 124) and earlier was giving A1 322 (SL solenoid) which I replaced with new one and code cleared. PNP cleaned and checked, RPM, axle sensors all good!

Sorry missed the last bit. I bough the car on limp mode and the owner said it needs PNP switch. The gear doesnt slip or make terrible noises!

I actually bought the car like this. The seller genuinely told it me it might be a PNP. The car looks very clean inside out. The transmission oil is in medium condition when I got it. I drained it and filled with new oil. Inside the pan there were no debris, just a little dirt on the magnet. I have encountered worse in other cars and the tranny was still ok.

There were initially on OBD i codes 332 which is the SL solenoid that I replaced and now no longer showing, and 124 (Short To Ground In Mode

Selector Switch Circuit) that become 114 now and lastly is the 232 (missing speed signal)

If I drive it on L, 2, then D it shift ok, but if I start on D, you know it starts on 3rd gear. I need to fix it so I can properly register it. I got a new after market PNP, I put there, but I couldnt get it calibrated! It seems when it get adjusted with reverse light on, the bolt that hold the PNP switch in place doesnt want to go in! So I cleaned the original one and put it back and car start straight away.
