Hey all,

Was just wondering what all would be involved in swapping out a power steering rack on my 1986 Volvo 240 wagon.

I have the cam setup the vehicle being built in JANUARY 1986 and I was told that the gear was worn out. Went to the upull but forgot my proper tools to get a cam rack out so my only option now is a rack from a 1983 240 with a zf rack I'm assuming from what they told me.

What all would I need to do to make the zf unit from the 1983 work in my 1986? I know the u brackets would need to be from the zf what else would be required and what else should I tell them to pull from the 83?

    have them pull the entire rack including inner tie rods which you might as well replace with new once its on your bench ditto for outer tie rod ends.

    if you can get them to do it have them loosen the 2 power steering lines at the pump and fluid resevoir NOT at the rack and supply those lines WITH the rack.

    get all mounting brackets/hardware.

    that's it.

      Sounds good. Yes I told them to include BOTH lines and ALL hardware from the 83

      Is it tough to swap when I go to do it or will everything pretty much slide out and in once I'm under the car?

        The only difficulty may be in loosening the lower U-joint. I loosen both ends of the joint (remove the pinch bolts) and slide it up further on the column shaft. Use a generous amount of lube and spread both ends for easier sliding. Be sure to center the rack motion and the steering wheel. Bleed the system by filling the reservoir and slowly go full lock back and forth--recheck the level. -- Dave

          i find the easiest way to loosen the lower u joint where it connects to the rack is using a compressor driven air chisel with a chisel blade. once the set bolts is removed from the joint the air chisel spreads the joint fast.
