1800ES Hinges 1800

Has anyone ever attempted to fix these when they get 'wallered' out? Something along the lines of a bushing, etc? I've gone through 6 pairs and they all seem to wear out on the long side (glass) of the hinge and have an incredible amount of play in them. Or did Volvo intentionally add slop to alleviate stress on the glass when opening it?

    I tried to edit this when I first posted it, but the bulletin board platform that hasn't been upgraded since 1992, I guess wont allow it.

    This is for the hinges on the GLASS HATCH. Thanks fellas!

      You should have gotten a message stating something to the effect of "you cannot edit your post after someone has responded to it".

      Though somewhat antiquated, I suspect it is set up that way because of contentious post/responses rather than repair solicitations.

        It's just so you can't backtrack and correct something you've said "that may be used in evidence against you". Not too relevant here but not being able to delete or edit nasty comments in previous posts does help to keep thinks civil.

      Dg;

      ...that's very different! Those hinges, like the 145 hinges of the same era, were of white metal and quite prone to wear...I have no specific experience removing and reworking, but I would think bushing and repinning would be a doable solution...careful with the brittle casting!...you might inquire to see if new replacements are available as an option.

      Let us know how you make out...some pictures would be nice...

      Good Hunting!

        These have been NLA for a long time now. I have had 6 pairs of these hinges in my hands - including a pair with less than 9k original on them. They all had the same lateral slop - which makes me wonder if that wasn't by design. There is no frame to take any stress - just the glass. I tend to think if one of the struts were to tire, the uneven stress might pop the glass. Dunno.

        I drilled out the roll pins. The new ones will be a tad larger. I'm also wondering if that won't firm things up a bit. I'm dismantling them anyways for re-plating. We'll see how they do when re-assembled.

        Thanks!

          These are probably very fussy to align so that they work smoothly at every angle of the window. There must also be a degree of change to the position of the glass mounted part due to sideways expansion and contraction so adjustment has to take that into account too. It must change quite a lot between full summer sun and frost on the glass. Likely needs a bit of slop to accommodate this. New softer seals might help if they are available.

            Dg, Derek;

            ...not only for reasons of accommodating thermal caused dimensional variations, as pointed out, but also because it's a big no-no to directly have (metal) mounting hardware in direct contact with glass is it isolated by rubber and plastic interfaces. I expect these provide all the dimensional compliance necessary.

            Dg; Please document hinge restoration well!

            Cheers

              Will do. The roll pins are in a blind hole and drill like they're hardened....no idea why but nothing surprises me. I removed the one on the long side to separate them. They're still very difficult to separate just from the burr and its actually machined like a hip socket - they kind of pop back together. From the looks of it, the larger roll pin will align it up a bit more - will still have plenty of play though.

              Everything for the car is going out for re-plating here ASAP, so will post their complete evolution when they come back.

    Doppelganger;

    A small amount of play was obviously necessary to allow hinges to move and doors to open, but Volvo did not "intentionally add slop"...that just kinda happens with time and use (and lack of maintenance).

    Yes, hinges can be rebuilt, but its not an insignificant job...a buddy did it a long time ago on his 122...his notes from memory: Hinge(s) have to be removed, and taking a door off is no small task...and after doing Driver's side, obviously the worst one, you might not be so enthused to do the passenger one...access to the hardware is not particularly good in the door-crease...an impact driver will be necessary (think airhammer!) ...pretreat with penetrant!(backside threads too) ...once removed, old pins need to be drilled out (so fixturing, alignment, and method are pretty important, so if refurbed ones are available at a fair price (see OP, no relation!), that's an option to consider if you don't have access to a machine shop!)...he did not bush them, but simply over-drilled and installed an oversized (hardened) pin (drill-rod) well lubed (graphite?)...an involved job, but I remember the finished door, installation was really nice!!

    Good Hunting!
