Hi, I am new to the Volvo 960, used to have 240! I have 2 questions related to the transmission AW30-40 LE on my 1995 Volvo 960: Is it normal that the Winter button comes back after pressing? While the E and S can be pressed without bouncing back?
The second question is related to the left side wiring on the transmission, as i was cleaning the wiring connections, the 4 colored wires that connect into a bracket where the transmission speed sensor goes got disconnected! I dont know which colors go into which hole in the squarish bracket!
Can some one send a picture of the wiring please? I am really worried to miss it up.
Thanks a lot

I don't visit very often so my belated answer may not be of any help. Your 960 is the same model year as mine so I'll try to contribute what little I know. The W mode selector operates differently than the E and S. When pressed, the W button does not stay down and it selects and deselects the Winter mode alternately with each press. The steady orange up arrow light on the dash indicates the mode's selection. The Economy and Sports mode selector buttons on the other hand stay down when pressed. These modes can not be deselected per se and must be replaced by the other of the two modes by pressing down the other selector button. Hope this clarifies the workings of these buttons.
I have the green book on the electrical system for this year model but I am not at home right now. I can later take a snapshot of the relevant page for you regarding the wiring if you still need it.

Thanks buddy for the WSE switch clarification ;)
I got 2 codes to deal with atm, these are 114 (mode selector switch) and 232 (missing speed signal).
I have ordered the WSE switch and will see how it goes when I pulg it in.
Wiring diagram for WSE and speed signal will be awesome!
Cheers

Here are download links for photos of the four relevant pages as I haven't figured out how to attach them to my reply. My personal experience has been that the faults sometimes are in the wiring or connectors rather than the actual part pin-pointed by the error code, especially when it involves missing signals. The engine speed RPM sensor is item 7/22 and is connected to connector A35, the foremost of the three on the driver's side of the transmission. The transmission mode selector is item 3/63.

Hi again,
Many thanks for your reply and illustrations. Sorry for a bit late reply, as I have been sick myself. I got the 1995 Volvo green book sent to me by another good guy. At the moment, I am waiting for the mode selector switch to arrive, which was supposed to be last Saturday and now it is lost by the USPS. I guess I have to order another one soon. I have checked the ground points in the car and I am just waiting for the part to plug it in.
Thanks again and have a good day.

Hi again,
Update on the transmission problem on 1995 Volvo 960.
I got the new WDE mode selector switch, it didnt fix the problem and here are the symptoms:
I connected the WSE switch, then the battery, started the car. The S and E lights are both on and no arrow on dash. Then the W light come on with the steady arrow in the dash (both E and S go off). This W and (E,S) on off continued while the car was warming up and gear on P. I already have jacked up the car so the rear wheels are free. Then I put it on D (by that moment the S and E were both on) the wheels started spinning and gear change normally then the W came one at around 30M/H and the blinking arrow started to show up together with the flashing W S E light. These symptoms were the same on the old WSE switch. Initially no blinking but nothing change when I press the WSE bottoms, then once the car moves, the fault become recognized.
So I gather the car learnt that the fault codes exist so it went into limp mode after has been sitting for a while with the battery disconnected. I read the codes and they were the same thing:
A1 124 (missing speed signal), and 232 (mode selector fault)
B2 122 (speed has not gone up high or something)
Could anyone shine a light on this mystery?
I have checked and cleaned the ground points on the engine, behind the headlights and under the driver seat.

Have you pulled apart the plastic plugs two at the transmission yet and cleaned the contacts and put them back together. You have to get under the car and they are located on the left side.? The wires are color coded i by passed the 4 plug connector and just crimped the wires together. Make sure you join up the right ones.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I did what you have mentioned here. I have the following codes atm A1 124, A1 232, A3 155.
Did check the wiring at the tranny, PNP, rear diff sensor, engine and under-seats grounds, replaced WSE switch, and still not fixed!

Check the wiring at the wse switch, pull it out of the console and hold it up, clear all codes and then see if it come back with the switch in a different spot you may have a wire that has worn through and earthing out to the body.
Does the speedo drop down to 0 and back up when driving, If you have a wagon take the spare tyre out and check the wiring at the back of the wheel compartment. Your rear diff speed sensor wiring runs through there and can get damaged easily.

Thanks for your reply.
Updates to all! the WSE problem, after checking the wiring of the mode selector switch, all the wires gave high voltage above 10v, which means there is a short somewhere and mostly in the TCM. So I replaced the TCM and the code 124 disappeared.
Next was code 232 (missing speed signal), after the checking the diff sensor and the wires they all seem ok. The speedometer has no issues in term of speed/ hr, however it generates the signal to the cruise control, ABS, TCM and ECU. I replaced the cluster and drove the car and It didnt go into limp mode.
However, I cleared the codes once, and A1 still read 232. But the car drives normally for now. I hope its fixed!

Well, that's good news!
Try clearing the codes again. Did you also try disconnecting the battery for awhile? Maybe overnight if necessary...

Hi Ozzy Oz,
As in Diary of a Madman or the Blizzard of Oz or something from a Frank L. Baum book?
Is the button stuck on the center console. You spill some fluid like soda or coffee down there?
From the 700-900-90 FAQ, we have:
Transmission: Automatic AW 30-40
https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionAutoAW30.htm
As for wiring, yet may be incomplete or not for your year:

And:

See Power Transmission.
Spook or some other folks may be able to help you better.
Hope that Helps.

Hi,
I actually bought the car with the blinking arrows and these shifting problems. I dont know weather someone spill something on the transmission area. I have ordered the WSE mode selector switch and going to replace it soon hopefully over the weekend.
I want to thank you very much for the manuals you provided, I was having a hard time to find them.
I will keep date about fixing this issue.
Cheers,
Oz
