Leaking in the Area of the Fuel Pump - 1990 244DL 200

Hello-

I have a 1990 244DL. I have found a leak in the area of my main fuel pump. I am having difficulty identifying exactly from where it is coming. I removed the 3 bolts that hold the housing for the pump and filter so I could get a closer look. Fuel is dripping at a rate of about one drop per second from the yellow wire going into the pump. It doesn't appear to be coming from the check valve above that wire. It looks like it is coming from the area where the wire connects to the pump and dripping off of that wire.

There are no issues with the car starting or running. Anyone else have this issue? Should I assume the fuel pump needs to be replaced?

Thanks!

Rob

Art, your photo-rich instructions are the best!

"... It looks like it is coming from the area where the wire connects to the pump and dripping off of that wire...."

If you suspect it's leaking from the elec connector, how about unplugging it and then cycle the ignition on and off a couple times and see if the tank pump will generate enough pressure expose the source of the leak. It may or may not be powerful enough.

Thanks for the advice, Chris. I was working alone. So I wasn't able to look at the pump while cycling the ignition. I decided to go ahead and replace the pump which came with a fuel check valve and that fixed the leak.

With the old pump off, I looked closely at the electrical connector and didn't see anything that indicated there was a leak. It seemed as if it were more likely that the leak was coming from the area where the fuel check valve meets the pump.

      Cheers,

      Rob

Rob, try wiping everything involved to pinpoint the leak. Telling you a certain thing is likely isn't nearly as good as your own eyes telling you what the trouble actually is.

If you live in a salty area, a common thing is the banjo fitting rusts. This could be on the pump-to-filter connection, or on the filter out line to the engine. I have some relevant pics in here: http://cleanflametrap.com/fline.html

'88 200, had a small drip/leak which could be smelled for a while, until I finally got under there and had a look see. It was the return line to the tank which had a couple pin holes, very small, from being in the rust belt. So this spring going in with new lines, new pump, filter, whatever it takes since this is my main runner. Keep'm running, they don't make them anymore. Always carry a fire extinguisher.

Thanks, Art. The pictures in the link you provided helped a lot. I wiped the pump down as best I could and still had trouble pinpointing the leak. It looked like it was coming from the positive electrical connector. But it may have also been leaking from the area where the fuel check valve connected to the pump. I decided to replace the pump which came with a new fuel check valve and the leak is no longer.

      Cheers,

      Rob

I had the a-typical but still common filter rusted under the clamp...intermittent leak as the rubber did, then did not plug the leak.
