New used ransmission geared lower than old one? 900 1994

Hi,

This is my first post to this forum, but I have been a FAQ reader for years.

After my old transmission for my '94 940 died, my shop put in another used transmission, said to be from a '95. The new one works well, but I have the odd feeling that the gearing is lower for the new one. That is, at freeways speeds the engine seems to be revving just a little higher than the old one.

Or it could be my imagination, or maybe I've gotten used to my wife's '10 Nissan, which does 80 while revving at only 2k!)

The overdrive works correctly, and it shifts well.

Can anyone tell me at what speed the engine should be running at say 70 mph? I did not see this in the FAQ, but my apologies if it is there.

Thank you.

Hi,

At 70 MPH the tachometer sits at 3K.

Dear U.S. Diver,

Hope you're well. Yes, Sir! At 70 mph, the engine should turn at 3,000 revs/minute, +/- 100 rpm.

If you car is a non-turbo, the transmission's dataplate (on the passenger side, if I recall correctly) should read AW71L. The "L" designates a locking torque converter. If your car has a turbo, the model should read "AW71".

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Spook, well I checked, and yes, it seems to rev just a hair over 3 grand at 70. So I guess the ratio is right. Guess I just got used to the lower revving newer cars. Thanks so much.

You sure it is not AW70L for NA?

Dear Onkel Udo II,

Hope you're well. I'm 99.99% sure that the dataplate reads 03-71L.

If it weren't raining, I'd jack-up the car and consult the transmission dataplate.

Other dataplates do not differentiate between AW70 and AW71 trannies.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks, guys. Not sure what tranny was put in there. I will drive the car tomorrow, check out the RPMs, and report back.
