HELP! No Brake lights or Turn signal lights 200 1979

Hi all, Kind of funny, before taking my car for a drive I checked my lights and all brake lights and turn signal lights worked properly, half way through the drive I lost everything, brake lights and turn signal lights, including the arrows on the dash they dont work either. The bulb failure light did not come on either. My headlights remain working properly.

All fuses are good and corrosion free!

So I am thinking it is my bulb failure relay and am wondering if there is a way to test to see if it works or not.

Or

Is there a certain ground that I should check. Just wondering where to start looking

Thanks

The bulb failure relay in your car is more reliable than the one in later cars having high mounted brake lamps. Besides that, the turn signals have nothing to do with it.

Check to see if some other accessories don't work when this happens, as it seems as though the problem might be at the power distribution box on the left fender by the hi-lo relay. Brake lamps use power that does not get interrupted by the ignition switch, and the same with the hazard flashers, but the turn signals get their power through fuse 13 and only work with the key.

I find it ironic that the colors red, white, and blue stand for freedom, until they're flashing behind you.

Thank you Art for the quick response I went out and checked out the box and it seemed fine.

Went through the fuses again and I got my turn signals to work. It ended up being that fuse 9 was a loose, bent the fuse holder for a better connection. kind of strange that this fixed the problem for the turn signals.

So how about the brake lights not working still. No bulb failure light on either, and I did notice that my parking brake light is out as well, could be a coincidence.

Sounds like the turn signals were coincidental as well. Probably you bumped fuse 13 while going through the fuses.

Maybe, rather than trying to logically tie symptoms to the same cause, focus on one symptom and troubleshoot: For non-working brake lights, don't expect the bulb out sensor to report if both are not lighting. Do you have a test light or multimeter? Do you need a wiring diagram?

Thank you Art. Yes I have a multimeter, I will start chasing down the problem.

Tracing brake lights in a 79 200 1979

Start at the easiest places to get a meter probe. First, see that fuse #6 has power on the right terminal with the pedal depressed. The brake light fuse is prone to work hardening and a tiny crack will form. Next easy place to check is at the tail light housing itself. You want to check the yellow wire at the harness connector, either side.

If something in the middle is suspect, the brake light pedal switch is the most difficult to reach, so reach up and pull the BFWS relay down from above the dash support, and use your meter probe to look at the wires going into it socket. The blue/red wire is the one coming from the pedal switch. The yellow wires leave for the tail light housings.

If tomatoes are technically a fruit, is ketchup a smoothie?
